Edema has pleasantly put his detractors to shame – Okwuofo

The new chairman of Delta State Local Government Service Commission, Chief (Mrs.) Nkem Okwuofo says Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, chairman of Warri South local government “has pleasantly put his detractors to shame”.

Mrs. Okwuofo who is a former Delta Broadcasting Service Warri boss, made this declaration Thursday May 20 when she led other members of the commission to Warri South Council Secretariat as part of her familiarization tour of the 25 local government councils in the state. According to her, Hon. Edema is one of those people didn’t think can perform “because of his kind of person”. Mrs. Okwuofo revealed that the commission has decided that all senior and junior staff in its employ that has served more than three and five years respectively will be transferred. While pledging that all cadres of staff will be trained and retrained, the local government service commission boss tasked workers of Warri South local government to brace up to the chairman’s gesture by being more dedicated to their duties. She described Warri South local government Council as a model to other local governments in the state and disclosed that prizes will soon be given to the best council chairman as well as local government in the state.

In an address, the Director of Personnel Management, Warri South local government, Sir Christopher Aghara, posited that the familiarization tour embarked upon by members of the commission shows “the commitment of the present leadership of the commission to the welfare of its workforce” and “the direction the policy of the commission would be hinged upon’. He attributed the prompt payment of staff salaries in the council “to the prudent management of its resources by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema”. While declaring that Warri South “ is the only council where sick staff are advanced money before they proceed to hospital”, the Warri South Director of Personnel Management noted that though the council has the highest allocation from the federation account, it “goes home with the least allocation after primary school teachers salaries have been removed”. He described the relationship between the Council Chairman, political class and workers as harmonious, even as he added that the council authorities place great importance to training to workers.

………. Underscores importance of co-operation between the commission, LG Chairmen

Meanwhile Mrs. Nkem Okwuofo has underscored the importance of cooperation between the commission and local government council chairmen in order to move the councils forward.

She made this known at Bomadi when she paid the council chairman, Hon. Prince Kalanama Penawou a courtesy call at his office during her state wide familiarization tour to the council. The former commissioner of Culture and Tourism explained that a bilateral cooperation between the commission and local government Chairmen is needed in the area of sharing information to ensure transparency and better interaction between the Local Government Councils and the commission.

Chief Okwuofu that the commission is working round the clock to ensure that staffs who are due for promotion are promoted.

In the area of training, chief Okwuofu noted that workshops and seminars would be organized to train staff regularly to increase productivity and efficiency in the local government system. She warned that hard times await those who run to their godfathers to avoid being transferred, stressing that the era of godfatherism is over. “We will not allow ourselves to be ruled from outside. We have integrity, which we must protect”, she declared.
The commission chairman expressed happiness over the cordial working relationship that exists between politicians and staff of the council, even as she lauded the chairman for prompt payment of staff salaries and wages.

On his part, the Bomadi council boss, Prince Penawou assured the visiting commission chairman of his willingness to cooperate and give support in areas needing collaboration to create synergy for better local government administration. Penawou eulogized her vision for the commission and congratulated her on her appointment as the commission chairman. Chief Okwuofu and members of the commission were received by the council chairman, his Vice, Hon. Akpokabowei Asigo, Supervisors, leader of the legislative Arm, Hon Vincent Eregbene as well as councilors.

At the council pavilion where an interactive session was held between the local government service commission chairman and staff of the council, Chief Okwuofu promised that workers welfare would be her top priority, as she hailed the staff for their mature disposition in working with the council chairman. The commission chairman admonished workers to be punctual to their duties and shun laziness.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of Personnel Management Mr. Agbeyeke said with staff strength of 619, the council derives its revenue from internally generated revenue, state allocation and federal Statutory Allocation. Mr. Agbayeke was quick at pointing out that the internally generated revenue base of the council “was slim”. This, according to him was due to low revenue potentials, among others.

The DPM also disclosed that there exists a very cordial working relationship between the political office holders and staff of the council, adding that salaries and leave transport grants are paid as and when due. Stressing further, Mr. .P. E. Agbayeke maintained that funds are being released on a regular basis for settlement of outstanding staff claims as well as staff accommodation, adding that office furnituring and equipments are also being addressed.

The DPM thanked the chairman and members of the commission for the prompt payment of local course allowances to officers in various academic programmes, even as he solicited for more training and promotion of staff to boost their efficiency and effectiveness.

Other members of the entourage include: Chief Benson Asoro-member representing Delta Central, Barr. Paul Uwechwe- member representing Delta North and South Chief Michael Seikegba -member representing Delta South.

LG Mass Transfer: Ekpemupolo calls for caution

The Chairman of Warri South West local government, Hon. George Ekpemupolo has appealed to the chairman of Delta State local government service commission, Chief (Mrs.) Nkem Okwuofu to exercise restrain in the planned mass transfer of local government workers across the state.

The Warri South West Council boss made the appeal Thursday May 20 when he received members of the commission who visited the council as part of their familiarization tour of local government councils in the state.

Hon. Ekpemupolo who was represented by his Vice, Hon. Blesson Omadoye explained that the planned mass transfer should be done in a way that the council’s wage bill will not have adverse effect on their resources. “I want to passionately appeal that the posting should be done in such a way as to ensure that the wage bills of the affected councils are not adversely affected. In other words if a given number of staff is being posted to a council, an equivalent number should also be posted out of that council. In that way, the wage bill of the receiving council would have balanced”.

In her response, the chairman of Delta State local government service commission, Mrs. Nkem Okwuofo, explained that the purpose of the familiarization tour is to ascertain the relationship between the political class and the civil servants as well as to know if the council chairmen are welfare friendly as far as workers entitlement are concerned. She disclosed plans by the commission to train and retrain its workforce and appeal to the council authority to ensure that leave transport grant, hotel accommodation as well as traveling allowances are paid alongside staff salaries.

In a keynote address at the ceremony, the Warri South West Council Head of Personnel Management, Mr. Johnson Boyikokamo noted the cordial relationship between the political office holders and the civil servants in the council. He listed achievements by the council authority to include the construction of its permanent secretariat due for commissioning soon.

Boyikokamo stated that the council is beset with some challenges in its quest at meeting the yearnings of people in the local government.

One of these challenges according to him “is the dearth of motor driver/mechanics”. He pleaded with the commission to give approval to the council to recruit ten motor/driver mechanics for the council and traditional rulers in the area.

The Warri South Council Head of Personnel Management also appealed to the chairman of the local government service commission to post more Nurses and Community Health Extension workers who are willing to serve in the riverine parts of the local government to the council.

Desist from illegal arrest of citizens, Uvwie Council boss charges Nigeria Police

The Chairman of Uvwie local government, Hon. Peter Abugewa has warned men of the Nigeria Police Special Anti Robbery Squad at the DDPA police station in Ugborikoko to desist from illegal arrest of citizens, just as he demanded for the immediate release of a staff of Uvwie local government council.

Our correspondent reports that the warning is fallout of an incident which began on Friday May 21 when one Obruche Ogheneochuko went to the Robinson shopping plaza in Warri to buy casing for his phone. According to him, he was in the plaza when some men came, held him alongside eight others and locked them up in a room inside the plaza. Fresh Angle gathered that his demand to know the reason for being held hostage met a brick wall

He reportedly brought out his identity card as a student of civil engineering at the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, to convince his abductors but to no avail. He further explained that in their presence the man who led the abductors called the police at “B” division in Warri but they told him that they don’t indulge in illegal arrest.
The abductee told Fresh Angle that the man whom he later discovered to be the chairman of traders in the plaza later called men of the police (SARS) who came to pick and took them to the Ugborikoko police station at about 12noon. A cousin of Obruche, Mr. Gbagbara Ogheneochuko who works with Uvwie local government council went to the police station to effect the release of his cousin.

He demanded the unconditional release of his brother, but the police who were not ready to listen asked him to work out. His resistance allegedly attracted a slap by a police man. That slap was actually returned to the police man by Gbagbara Ogheneochuko and in the process a serious fight ensued between them. He was thrown into cell alongside his brother he came to bail.

On Saturday May 22, our correspondent who is also a cousin to both Ogheneochuko Obruche and Ogheneochuko Gbagbara called at the police station after hearing the matter in the morning. He demanded that the boys be released, but was told that the matter was being handled by SARS.

He immediately contacted Press Secretary to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Mr. Linus Chima who asked him to report the incident to DPO of the Ekpan police station.

On getting there, he was told that the DPO was not on seat. He met with the DCO who asked him to go back to the station and speak with the DPO at Ugborikoko.

Soon after he arrived at the Ugborikoko police station, the DPO came.

Fresh Angle called the police officer who asked him to speak with the DPO at Ugorikoko and communicate the feedback to him. After speaking, the DPO told our correspondent that the matter was in the hands of SARS. He even spoke with the senior police officer with the GSM of our correspondent.

Not satisfied, our correspondent called SARS on phone but was told to wait as they were on their way coming. Fifteen minutes after they arrived, our correspondent informed them that he was sent by the press secretary to the governor and identified himself as a press man, the police men were provoked the moment they heard press secretary to governor and replied “we are not afraid of the governor and his secretary”, claiming they are federal police.

They later confessed that the matter was not in their hands but in the hands of the chairman of Robinson Shopping Plaza who called them to help pick the boys.

Fresh Angle gathered from some respondents that the chairman has allegedly been on the deal for some time now with the police at “B” division but they wondered why they exonerated themselves this time. Others say the chairman should be dealt with because they feel he is a threat to the society.

Before the arrival of the chairman of Uvwie local government, the police allegedly demanded for sixty thousand naira for Ogheneochuko Gbagbara’s bail and five thousand naira for that of Ogheneochuko Obruche. The duo was later bailed with five and seven thousand naira respectively after the intervention of the Uvwie council boss.

: Our opponents can’t claim not to belong to Delta Chapter – Ohanaeze Chieftain

The Chairman Care-taker Committee of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Delta Central and South, Chief Agbagha E. Ogbuanu has declared that opponents of the new Onyeisi Ndigbo of Delta Central and South, Sir. Peter Chukwu can not claim not to be members of Delta State chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

The Ohaneze Chieftain made this declaration Sunday May 23 during a press briefing held with selected newsmen at the Palm Groove Motel in Warri. Chief Ogbuanu noted that there are enough correspondences to prove the membership of the opposition, adding that those making such claims are far from the truth. “That is far from the truth because when they were leaders of Ohaneze Delta Central and South, they used to attend meetings at the state chapter secretariat. There are so many correspondences between them and the leadership of the Delta State chapter”.

On why the National Igbo Day has not been celebrated in Delta state since 2007, Chief Ogbuanu responded swiftly, “the Igbo Day celebration in 2007, 2008 and 2009 failed because their organizers did not have the mandate of the care-taker committee and the majority of Ndigbo to organize such an event”. He added, “for that of 2009 celebration, the High Court of Justice Warri made an order nullifying the power of the organizers to hold Igbo day celebration”. He blamed the six year old crisis that was resolved February this year by the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohaneze Ndigbo at Ogwashiukwu on “those who lost out in the contest for the Ezeigbo/Ezeudo titles in the various branches of Ohaneze Ndigbo in various states of the country”. According to him, they instigated the South East council of traditional rulers against holders of the Ezeigbo title in the Diaspora.

While disclosing that his care-taker committee which came into existence September 25, 2007 will hand over to a newly elected executive at this year’s Igbo Day Celebration, Chief Ogbuanu noted that arrangements are already in top gear to conduct a credible election that will usher in the new executive. He appealed to all aggrieved persons or groups to bury all bitterness and join hands in sustaining the peace so far attained, promising that everybody will be carried along in the electoral process to usher in a new executive.

Answering Pastor for close to 40 years is a silent protest – Oritsejafor

Second time National President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has revealed that his decision to answer pastor after almost 40years of preaching the gospel is a silent protest to title syndrome synonymous with Nigerians.

The widely traveled preacher made this revelation Sunday May 30 while addressing members of his congregation on the importance of being proud of whatever profession one finds his or herself.

Pastor Oritsejafor popularly addressed as Papa by members of his Word of Life Bible Church, noted that unlike the Western World where a carpenter or any artisan is proud of his job, Nigerians are title freak and egoistic hence the answering of Bishop by young preachers who have spent barely a year pastoring. “Let me reveal something to you, I chose to answer pastor after many years of preaching as a silent protest to all these big titles. It’s just nonsense, I think we attach too much importance to titles, we should be proud of whatever we are doing”, he advised.

Dare to dream

A dream is a supernatural vision of how God wants you to leave your life in the future. Many times people all over the world, fail to dream or work along their God-given dreams, because of fear of failure and possibly the occurrence of past failure. Just because you failed does not make you a failure, it is the inability to pick one’s self from the pit of failure, after a setback has occurred that makes a person a failure. One thing you must know is that failure is a necessary step and the only step to success.

All great men have failed at least once in their life time, anyone who has never failed at one time or the other is not really a success, failure is the raw material in which success is made of.

From Abraham Lincoln to Michael Jordan, failure has been recorded in their lives. Do you know that Michael Jordan failed to catch the ball 3,000 times yet he went into history as the legend of basketball. Failure has been and will be a part of life. It shouldn’t stop you from achieving your God given dreams. Remember the poorest person in the world is not the one without money but the one without dreams. The world is not short of money, but short of people with ideas.

Ideas rule the world, that dream of yours is what the world is waiting for. You may say who am I to have a dream that will change the world, there is no such thing like a useless or no good person, for every living being is a walking breathing potential of success. There is nothing that is impossible to achieve. Believe you can, oh yes, you can achieve those dreams of yours, the potential are already inside you, all you have to is to unleash yourself and believe. Remember talent without confident is failure at it’s best. Be positive, keep speaking positive words of confidence into your life at all times. Don’t let fear or distraction to stand in your way. The simple act of success is focus; no man can make a meaningful life or see a way out of difficulties if he stays distracted. Do not let fear or anyone talk you out of your dreams. It is yours that is why only you and you alone can bring it to pass, with God on your side I tell you, you are unstoppable.

Do you know the bible characters are just ordinary men who did extra ordinary things? Just like Joseph in the bible, Edison and Michael Jordan, life will throw things at you that will put you at a stand still, just as these great men stood tall, raised their head up, square your shoulders and face life head -on.

Remember, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Give life the “I never quit slogan”, for you are a
champion in the making and nothing can or will stop you. Life is an interesting journey, only those who dare to try will live forever young, with this I dare to say dream and dream positively.

Quotes
Brain Tracy – Between you and every goal that you which to achieve, there is a series of obstacles and the bigger the goals, the bigger the obstacles.

Michael Jordan – Obstacles don’t have to stop you, if you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it or walk around it.

Ernest Hemingway - A man can be destroyed but not defeated.

Stephen Kaggwa – Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.

: We have been asked to sheath the sword – Okumagba
I want to give him a 3rd term – Abido

The controversial endorsement of the incumbent member representing Warri South Constituency II in the State House of Assembly, Hon. (Barr.) Dennis Omovie by a group of “ward executives” at his Kotokoto country home in Udu December 2009 is causing disquiet among the two Urhobo clans in Warri, Fresh Angle can authoritatively reveal.

Fresh Angle can also report that while Hon. Dennis Omovie who is enjoying his second term at the State House of Assembly is poised to make a return come 2011, an indigene of Okere Urhobo who is currently based abroad Mr. Matthew Poko Opuoru is speculated to be strategizing to lay claim to the seat. The disquiet got to a level that the traditional leadership of both clans temporarily stepped in to calm frayed nerves. Chief Emmanuel Okumagba while reacting to the issue summed it up this way, “anyone who is an officer of the party and open his mouth wide to endorse a candidate before the primaries does not deserve to remain an officer of the party, it is against the rule. The leadership of Agbarha and Okere clan have stepped into the issue to stop the media cross fire. As the overall leader of this two clan, we have been asked to sheath the sword on matters of third tenure, so it will be out of place for me as overall leader after attending a meeting when that decision was taken by the traditional leadership of both communities to comment any further, I want to be silent on that by way of my opinion on the matter”.

Chief Okumagba added, “the people of Okere Urhobo and Agbarha need to have a memorandum of understanding on how elective office should be shared. In 2003, it was shared between the Urhobos and the Itsekiris, not simply on superfluous performance. There is also the need to stamp serious authority on the power sharing formula between the Urhobos and Itsekiris on party chairmanship, local government chairmanship and House of Assembly seat so that no one renege on such understanding”.

The former councilor in defunct Warri local government as well as present member of Delta State University Governing Council described the position of the three I’s (Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri) in Delta South in terms of power sharing formula as a misnomer and opined that Urhobos of Warri be excised to Delta Central to check the “marginalization”.

Second time Chairman of Agharha CDC in his reaction to the controversial endorsement of Hon. Dennis Omovie said, “we are all Urhobo people, it is the beauty

of democracy. They (Okere Urhobo) also have the right to say so, Hon. Omovie is from Edjeba and I’m from Igbudu. You don’t talk about kingdoms in politics, you talk of geographical areas, and politics is geographical constituency. I’m impressed in what he’s doing and I want to give him a third term as a political leader in this place, but everyone has a right to agitate. The Okere Urhobo people have a commissioner and SUBEP Chairman from that axis and no body in Agbarha is saying that Bernard (Okumagba) should step down”.

Chief Israel Abido also spoke on the call for reform in Delta State PDP by Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark. According to him, “he is a PDP man and elder, he has a right to call for reformation”. He quipped, “there has never been a permanent executive anytime in PDP, that in its self is reformation”. When asked if Chief Clark’s call is not a sign of crack in Delta State PDP, the PDP chieftain responded, “that is the beauty of democracy, without nonsense you cannot see senses, I see it as a democratic process”.

Fresh Angle can however report that most politicians in the state are evading press interview due to obvious uncertainties except for the cross fire media advertorials on the Ibori Vs EFCC debacle often published with controversial names due to its political implication on the 2011 polls in Delta State.

They took Ibori just to distract Uduaghan
– Golly

Secretary to Warri South West local government, Hon. Emmanuel Oritseweyinmi Golly says the on-going political travail of former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori is to distract Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in his return bid to Delta government house come 2011.

Hon. Golly who was one time Deputy leader of Warri South West local government legislative Arm and two time supervisory councilor in the local government, stated this recently in an exclusive chat with Fresh Angle at his Ubeji residence. While affirming that Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan will return to government house come 2011 no matter the distractions, Hon. Golly acknowledged that the present zoning structure in the country, particularly in Warri South West “sometimes disallow a performer not to rerun”. He commended Hon. George Ekpemupolo, Chairman of Warri South West for constructing the permanent site of the council secretariat as well as other laudable projects in the local government. The multiple professional, academic and merit award winner as well as Chairman of Referees Society, Warri, declared that governor Emmanuel Uduaghan ”has done very well to return to government house”, even as he noted that every leader must be criticized no matter the performance.

Fresh Angle reliably gathered that Hon. Emmanuel Golly who is from the present Deghele ward in Warri South West local government is under intense pressure to vie for the Chairmanship of the local government following the gentleman agreement between the Ijaws and Itsekiris in the local government for a one tenure power rotation which will see Itsekiris taking over at the end of Ekpemupolo’s tenure next year.

How 13 year old committed suicide in Bayelsa

Tragedy struck recently in Ebedebiri town in Sagbama local government area of Bayelsa state when a 13 year old, Master James Gabriel committed suicide.

The death of the 13 year old son of a businessman was still a mystery when Fresh Angle visited, as the family was yet to recover from the shock. The father of the deceased, Mr. Gabriel Wilson said he was out of town on a business trip when some members of his family came locating him. According to him, the surprise visitors demanded his immediate return home, without letting him know why he is being needed with such urgency. “When I got home, they broke the sad news of my son’s death that he committed suicide. That day will ever remain fresh in our lives”, adding “it will remain memorable in our minds”.

The father further explained that the late James was asked to go ahead of his mother, Tamaralayefa Gabriel to weed grasses on a family plot where cassava was planted while she would meet him up after attending to other matters in town. To her surprise when she got to the farm, she could not find her son. He explained that she hurried back home with much apprehension as though she had an inkling of something going wrong somewhere. She hinted some family members who immediately constituted themselves into search teams. The late master James was found hanging on the rod in the children’s room at his father’s house. They rushed him to a hospital. After medical examination by the medical director, it was revealed to them that he had died long on the rope before he was brought down.

The 42 year old father of 4 attributed it to what he described as “African remote control” by his enemies, he regretted the death of his son whom he said never faced hardship in life. The mother, a civil servant who is in her early thirties could not put herself together, even as people were seen in droves expressing bewilderment over the tragedy. Late Master James Gabriel who was a primary six pupil has since been buried at Ebedebiri town.

Shun social vices, Bomadi council boss charges youths

Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Kalanama Penawou has called on children and youths in Bomadi to shun social behaviours that are inimical to their growth and development.

Hon. Penawou made this call during this year’s children’s day celebration in Bomadi at the Government Mixed Model Secondary School playground. The Bomadi council boss while addressing the children, charged them to reciprocate government’s huge investment in their education, health and overall development by cultivating the spirit of self-discipline, loyalty, respect for constituted authority, dialogue in the resolution of dispute, hard work, honesty and other civil virtues.

Hon. Penawou who was represented by his vice, Hon. Akpokabowei Asigo, implored the youths to shun anti-social behaviours such as drug abuse, prostitution, cultism and examination malpractice. Hon Kalanama Penawou noted that children’s day celebration is an annual event that provides the opportunity for government at all levels in Nigeria and the society in general to reflect on the problems and challenges confronting our children and youths as well as their place in the task of nation building. He stressed that the task of creating an enabling environment for the children and youths to attain their full potential in life is the responsibility of both government and parents.

According to him, this year’s theme, “Partnering for improved Nutrition for mother and child” underscores the importance of nutrition in human growth and development, adding that proper nutrition makes the mother healthy and a healthy mother will produce a healthy child who will be a leader of tomorrow. Penawou further stated that it is in realization of the significance of improved nutrition for the mother and child that government at all levels have made concerted efforts to put in place policies and programmes that will guarantee improved nutrition for the mother and child as that will ultimately translate to a stronger, virile and prosperous society.

The council chairman maintained that there are several skill acquisition and leadership training centres for youths in the country, even as he said that his administration has from time to time supported various programmes aimed at the development of the youth. He promised to continually support the various immunization programmes with a renewed commitment.

While highlighting some of his achievements in the area of youth development, the council chairman said his administration has completed a computer based youth / women development centre in Bomadi town. According to him, when fully operational it will afford youths and other users the opportunity of computer training and communication with other parts of the world via the internet. Speaking further, the council chairman said his administration has also completed and put into use a nursery school/vocational centre in Bomadi and other communities of the local government area.

He further noted that his administration engaged the services of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to train sixty (60) youths of the local government in different skill and trades as well as providing them with starter-packs, even as he reiterated his commitment in the task of creating a peaceful and conducive environment for the development of their full potentials.

The C.I.E. of Bomadi local government, Mr. O. J. Edafeghawara lauded the chairman of the council for ensuring that children and youths of the area join their counterpart to celebrate their day.

Highpoint of the ceremony was a match past by various schools across the local government area and inter-school cultural dance competition which saw Government Mixed Model Secondary School Bomadi clinching the first position both in the match past and the cultural display.

Wurukeseye Ogbeinama who is the Izon yin (mother of the Ijaw nation) while expressing her profound gratitude to the governor of the state, said by this development, he has endeared himself to the hearts of not only the people of Bomadi local government area, but also Ijaws in both Bayelsa and Delta State who are sure to benefit from the school. “I want to thank his Excellency, the executive governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan for this great honour done the Ijaws by bringing education to our door step”, she stated. She pledged to use her position as the Izon yin to promote the course of the Ijaw nation. Chief Wurukeseye Ogbeinama further stated that as the Izon yin, a traditional title, conferred on her by leaders cutting across the Ijaw nation, the responsibility has therefore fallen on her laps to play her motherly role in mobilizing the Ijaw women to take active part in politics and in the scheme of things in the society.

Ogege by notable Ijaw leaders across the Ijaw nation. “The selection was based on sterling qualities which they saw in me as having the patriotism and sentiment to be mother of the Ijaw nation”.

Chief Ogbeinama maintained that she became the Izon yin following the death of her predecessor, Chief Ogege, the first Izon yin from Akugbene in Bomadi Local Government Area. Bomadi local government Elders Forum Exco inaugurated

The executive committee of the Bomadi local government area Elders Forum has been inaugurated with a mandate to adopt consultation in its pursuit of political events in the local government area.

The president of the forum, Chief (Hon.) William Opuata Orupade while swearing-in members of the forum, charged them to be more dedicated to the course of the forum and appealed for optimal cooperation and sacrifice among members. Chief Orupade admonished the new executive to shun divisive tendencies and adopt dialogue in the resolution of disputes. “We must work as a formidable team and adopt the concept of collective responsibility. We must assume full responsibility of advising and partnering with both the state and local government council on socio-economic well-being of our people. We must struggle for the emancipation of our people”.

Chief Orupade added that the forum is a child of circumstance, which was formed four years ago as a rallying point to articulate ideas that would be channeled to entrench a unified direction among the political class in the array of interests. “We will no longer allow just anybody to steal our votes, we say no to imposition of candidates. That is why the forum is calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to conduct credible elections in 2011. We are advocating for “one man, one vote”, he declared.

The president stressed that the rural urban dichotomy that exists in terms of distribution of social amenities can only be bridged if the likes of the forum is properly fine-tuned as a pressure group to attract the much needed development to the area. He noted that the forum is likened to that of the Arewa Consultation Forum of the North, Afenifere Socio-Political group of the West and the Ohanaeze-Ndigbo of the East, which he said remains the mouth piece of the people.

Why Ayomike’s book launch was shifted to Lagos

The shifting of the launch of a new book written by prominent Niger Deltan and famous Warri historian, J.O.S Ayomike from Chevron Club Warri to Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos is at the behest of Delta State government, Fresh Angle can exclusively report.

Fresh Angle gathered from impeccable sources that content of the book titled, “Warri: A Focus on The Itsekiri” which deals with historical relationship between Urhobos and Itsekiris in the pre Independence era was viewed with security concerns by the state government.

The book which has contributions from Chief Isaac Jemide and Barr. Edward Ekpoko, is put together by the author as a, “response to continuing Urhobo attacks on Itsekiri history”. It offers, “the comprehensive examination of the Itsekiri of Nigeria, including Warri, the Olu of Warri and the legal maneuvers of their vilifiers”.

But for the timely intervention of an Itsekiri patriot who once served in the Caretaker Committee of old Warri South local government and a prominent Itsekiri youth leader, some youths who acted on misguided information would have attacked the home of the author.

Fresh Angle have it on good authority that earlier efforts to get words of commitment from government quarters on the book lunch were unsuccessful until prominent traditional rulers and leaders outside the state showed solid commitment to attend the grand book lunch now slated for July 2. Notable among these Nigerians are the Oni of Ife and the Oba of Benin who we gathered is to send a high powered delegation of Benin chiefs.

Feelers reaching Fresh Angle also indicates that the shift in venue may have given the book lunch bigger prominence as several foreign embassies and international civil society groups has been contacted.

Benin and Warri: Meeting points in History, The Itsekiri perspective and A History of Warri are two of the recent books written by J.O.S Ayomike

Editorial

Edema, redefining grassroots governance and transparency

Anyone who has followed Fresh Angle Newspaper from its first edition January 2010 till now will agree that it’s not a community Newspaper given to praise singing or propagating primordial interests in its reportage or editorial. We have often constructively report issues and criticize governance at any level no matter whose ox is gored. But recent event as far as grassroots governance in Delta state is concerned has made it imperative for us to veer of the norm and focus our editorial on a man who though not a 100% favourite of political bigwigs, but remains an enviable performer and often given plaudits by people of the grassroots.

He is Honourable Matthew Mofe Edema, Chairman Warri South local government. On assumption of office May 2008, Hon. Edema popularly addressed as Man of God by his admirers met a debt of over N30million in the council as well as two months salary owed to staff of the council.

Two years on the saddle however, the current Warri south local government boss who has few friends but inwardly admired by many has not just made borrowing history in Warri South, but gone ahead to record his name as the only council boss in Delta State that pays
staff salaries latest 25th of every month in spite of the limited monthly federal allocation after deduction of primary school teachers’ salaries.

He has been able to achieve this feat to the admiration of both his fellow chairmen and civil servants in the local government service by conserving reasonable sum whenever excess crude is shared from the federation account. This has not in any way affected the transparent manner he has carefully implemented his agricultural, sports, peace and infrastructural programmes.

Infact, Warri South is not just free from bank debts but also not owing any contractor doing business with the council. I must note here that this editorial is neither sponsored, censored, influenced or favour seeking, but a rare courage to encourage selfless leadership borne out of genuine desire to serve and should therefore serve as a part on the back to continually give more to the society as well as challenge political leaders and aspirants jostling for various positions in the next general elections to wake up to the challenges of genuine human service rather than targeting our public treasury.

Just as we will not fail to give plaudits to genuine and transparent leaders, the public should be rest assured that Fresh Angle will never be found wanting in making constructive criticisms.

: Intense speculation trails Orubebe’s candidacy despite denials

Despite media reports credited to the Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Ministry, Elder Godsday Orubebe that he will not contest the 2011 gubernatorial poll in Delta State, speculations are rife that the former Special Adviser to ex-Governor James Ibori will indeed run for the state plum job.

Feelers reaching Fresh Angle as at press time suggests that already the self styled Odidimadi of Africa and Deputy Chairman of Delta State PDP, Chief Ighoyota Amori who we gathered has good relationship with Elder Godsday Orubebe has in fact been tipped as Orubebe’s running mate. Fresh Angle however scooped from a credible source that the speculated choice of Chief Ighoyota Amori as Orubebe’s running mate is not going down well on Ijaw National leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark. The unusual silence of Chief Ighoyota Amori on political developments in the state as well as the travails of Chief James Ibori, the man widely acclaimed as the father of PDP in the state has further fueled speculations about the uneasy clam in the state PDP. Recent reports credited to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan where he said commissioners in the state who are not loyal will be shown the way out has further heightened speculations that indeed the centre can no longer hold in the Delta State PDP as far as the running for 2011 is concerned.

Igbo Political Forum cuts across both factions of Ohanaeze – Iwuchukwu

Chairman and Co-ordinator of Igbo Political Forum and The New Face of Imo in Delta State, Mr. Charles Iwuchukwu says the Igbo Political Forum cuts across the two factions of Ohanaeze that was in conflict.

Mr. Charles Iwuchukwu made the clarification recently at Palm Groove Motel in an exclusive chat with Fresh Angle. According to him, the Igbo Political Forum is a branch of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, where the Igbos meet and discuss the political front of the Igbo people and how they should be reintegrated into the Delta political mainstream as well as their states of Igbo origin. The aim he said is to see how they can put themselves together to be able to be re-integrated back home.

Mr. Iwuchukwu who described the Ikedi Ohakim led government in Imo state as inspiring, said the Igbo Political Forum is not peculiar to any political party. He used the medium to advise Igbos to feel free to join any party of their choice, adding that all the Igbo Political Forum wants to see is that Igbos who are not in their state of origin will have a voice going back home.

Mr. Charles Iwuchukwu also called on the Imo State Governor, Ikedi Ohakim to run for a second term to consolidate on the progress of work he has done in the state.

He vowed that the forum will soon mobilize home to champion the governor’s re-election bid in 2011.

The member representing GRA ward in Warri South Legislative Arm, Honourable Hesse Isaac Edah has described the 50th birthday celebration of the Chairman, House Committee on Environment in Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. (Mrs.) Omawumi Udoh as symbolic and a sign of better days ahead for the delectable lawmaker.

UNAA Holds 72nd NEC Meeting

The University of Nigeria Alumni Association (UNAA) World-wide recently held its 72nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the spiritual ground of Covenant University, Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State. The theme was “Public-Private Partnership: A Viable Tool for Economic Growth in Nigeria”.

In his key note address, Professor Pat Utomi, Director, Lagos Business School and an alumnus of the University (Mass Communication Department) stated that essential goods and services could not be provided in Nigeria due to the weakness of various institutions based on the fact that we fail to plan. He was of the opinion that public-private partnership would assist Nigeria immensely noting that this assisted many other countries all over the world.

Professor Utomi who spoke much on the reputation challenges and the need to rebuild the minds of political leadership also pointed out that Nigeria can be transformed through public-private partnership if it can be pursued vigorously and was of the view that Nigeria will rise again.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chancellor of the Covenant University, Bishop (Dr.) David Oyedepo made it abundantly clear that no one would come from somewhere to develop Nigeria for us stating that we have to join hands to make our country great. In order to achieve this, he opined that men with great vision should be contacted to assist to rebuild our nation adding that currently there are a lot of immaturities in our system.

Dr. Oyedepo who is the General Overseer (G.O.) of the Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) made it crystal clear that the richest oil well is the human skull. While describing the UNAA as great institution, he urged the members to discuss on how to enhance the value of our institutions noting that leadership is by product or performance not by words. His words, “Build a reputation on what you have done not what you are to do. Hoping without working makes a hopeless invention”.

The Man of God prophetically stated that Nigeria will not be destroyed and that its glory would be restored calling on the good people not to go into hiding. They should come out without delay and demonstrate their capacity as well as professionalism. Dr. Oyedepo called on all Nigerians to wake up to their duties and sense of responsibilities.

While welcoming UNAA members earlier to the Covenant University environment, its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aize Obayan called on university administrators as well as alumni associatios to identify what will sustain universities in Nigeria. She made it known that the motto of the university “To restore the dignity of the black man” is similar to that of the UNN which is “To restore the dignity of man”. She noted that the UNAA is one of the vibrant alumni associations in Nigeria. He thanked the UNAA for considering the University environment in their previous NEC meeting of 2004 and that of 2010.

In his lecture, the guest speaker, Mr. Nnaoke Ufere currently Chief Executive Officer at iServiceX Inc. Atlanta Georgia, USA talked on citizen leadership as a process where individual or groups of individual worked together for the benefit of a nation.

Ufere who had a first class honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the UNN in 1981 and also a recognized expert in business transformation, competitive strategy and entrepreneurship stated that while Nigeria has made development in politics, more are yet to be achieved for the people. Mr. Nnaoke Ufere who holds an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School (Heinz Fellow) said that Nigerians suffer in schools that are under funded and where professors fail to teach what they were employed to do. He disclosed that $400bn U.S. dollars have been spent on education since Nigeria gained independence on the 1st of October 1960 but regretted that nothing on ground to justify the amount. He used the opportunity to call on Nigerians to be responsible and accountable in order to transform and change Nigeria. Such transformation, he went on, could be discussed in work places.

In an address by the Ota Branch President, Linda Ugochi Agua-Onyekweche she stated that the Covenant University was chosen as the venue for the NEC meeting because the environment is conducive and safe. She then used the opportunity to thank the management of the University for allowing UNAA the use of their facilities.

The National President of UNAA, Dr. Nwanne Chioke used the opportunity to appeal to the University of Nigeria leadership to strive very much to cultivate close ties with the alumni community. This, he pointed out would benefit the institution in fund raising, job placement and reputation among other good things.

The chairman of the ceremony, Dr. Okey Ewurum reminded members of the almost forgotten role of the association, which, according to him is to remain as primary support group for each other adding that many of the members have fond memories of their university years, which are traditionally a time of discovering new intellectual avenues that we trust will lead us to satisfying career paths.

Part of activities marking the ceremony was the presentation of Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAW) to His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel popularly known as “OGD” Executive Governor of Ogun State; Professor Aize Obayan, Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Ota; Mr. Nnaoke Ufere, CEO/President, iServiceX Inc. Atlanta Georgia, USA; Dr. Cosmas Maduka, CEO, Coscheris Group and Sir Nze Anayi (immediate past UNAA president) and Chairman/CEO, Kendall Group. The Life and Times of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua
(16th August 1951 – 5th May 2010)

By: Charles Ikedikwa Soeze, fhnr, fcida, fcai, cpae, son

Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was the President and Commander in chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 13th Head of State. He served as governor of Katsina State in Northern Nigeria from 29th May 1999 to 28th May 2007. He was declared the winner of the Nigerian presidential election held on the 21st of April 2007 and was subsequently sworn in on the 29th of May 2007. He was a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the biggest political party in Africa. In November 2009, Yar’Adua left for Saudi Arabia to receive treatment for pericarditis. He returned to Nigeria in 2010, where he died on the 5th of May.

In beginning the writing of this tribute proper, I have to quote Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) who remains one of the nineteenth century’s most misunderstood and misquoted philosophers who said about death and I quote “We can take precautions against all sorts of things, but so far as death is concerned we, all of us live like inhabitant of a defenceless citadel”. This makes the grim transition of President Yar’Adua and the rites of sorrow that Nigerians bear over his death quite severe indeed. For while death has always been an irreparable loss, the death of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua who devoted his entire life and energy to causes dear to the hearts of humanity is a peculiar kind of agony. Furthermore, in the words of Joyce Curry, “I consider life as a gift from God, I did nothing to earn it and now that the time has come for me to give it back, I have no right to complain”. Again, King Solomon sums it up by saying that “To everything there is a season, and it time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die;,,,”

In fact, poets and philosophers tell us that death can be life, a higher life, a regeneration of the self, in the same way, in fact that the flower is pruned to groom a greater foliage, in the same way, the egg is cracked to make omelette”. In other words, we must all have the strong conviction in life-after-death.

From whichever perspective former President Yar’Adua’s career is assessed, the virtues of consistency, sincerity of purpose, courage of conviction, utmost selflessness and doggedness in pursuing the people’s cause cannot be denied. Even those who may have cause to disagree with some of his actions and pronouncements cannot deny that his commitment to the realization of the common good is total.

As part of his efforts to develop the Niger Delta Region, President Yar’Adua once said “I will make the Niger Delta Region a national priority. I believe the region is strategic to our survival as a nation, and we must make it secure”. Yar’Adua made this statement while unveiling his plans for the Niger Delta Region (the goose that lays the golden eggs for the economic survival of the nation) at a public function. Towards this end, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua created the Ministry for Niger Delta Affairs and was able to convince the militants in the Region to surrender their guns.

Former President Yar’Adua was an astute politician, philanthropist, crowd puller, and goal getter in any situation. In a nation whacked silly by corruptions, the immediate past president fidelity to due process and the twin principles of transparency and accountability is a ringing rebuke to several perverse elements that have taken centre stage in our polity, thereby arresting the developmental strides of our great nation. He believed passionately in the unity and indivisibility of our great country, Nigeria the giant of Africa.

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was born into an aristocratic Fulani family in Katsina, his father, a former Minister for Lagos during the First Republic of Nigeria, held the royal title of Mutawalli (custodian of the treasury) of the Katsina Emirate, a title which Umaru Musa Yar’Adua inherited. He commenced his education at Rafukka Primary School in 1958, and moved to Dutsimma Boarding Primary School in 1962 – 1964. He attended the Government College at Keffi from 1965 until 1969. In 1971, he received a Higher School Certificate from Barewa College. He attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria from 1972 to 1975, obtaining a B.Sc. degree in Education and Chemistry, and then returned in 1978 to achieve an M.Sc. degree in Analytical Chemistry.

Umaru Musa married Turai of Katsina State in 1975; they had seven children (five daughters and two sons). Their daughter Zainab is married to Kebbi State Governor, Usman Saidu Nasamu Dakingari. Another daughter, Nafisat is married to Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was married to Hauwa Umar Radda as a second wife from 1992 to 1997. They had two children (both males).

His first appointment was at Holy Child College in Lagos from 1975 to 1976. He later served as a lecturer at the College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria, Kaduna State between 1976 and 1979. In 1979, Umaru Musa started working as a lecturer at the College of Art Science remaining in this position until 1983 when he began working in the corporate sector.

Umaru Musa worked at Sambo Farms Ltd. In Funtua, Katsina State as its pioneer General Manager between 1983 and 1989. He served as a board member, Katsina State Farmers Supply Company between 1984 and 1985; Member, Governing Council of Katsina College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria and Katsina Polytechnic between 1978 and 1983; Board Chairman of Katsina State Investment and Property Development Company (KIPDECO) between 1994 and 1996. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua served as a director of many companies, including Habib Nigeria Bank Ltd. 1995-1999; Lodigians Nigeria Ltd. 1987 – 1999; Hamada Holdings 1983 – 1999; and Madara Ltd. Vom. Jos, 1987 – 1999. He was chairman, Nation House Press Ltd. Kaduna, from 1995 to 1999.

He was a self-confessed Marxist. During the second republic (1979 to 1983), he was a member of the leftist People’s Redemption Party (PRP), while his father was briefly the national vice chairman of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), During the transition programme of the first and only military president Nigeria has ever got, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida popularly known as “Maradona” or “IBB”, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was one of the foundation members of Peoples Front, a political association under the leadership of his elder brother, the late Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. That association later metamorphosed as the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Umaru Musa was a member of the 1988 Constituent Assembly, He was a member of the party’s national caucus and the SDP state secretary in Katsina and contested the 1991 governorship election, but lost to Saidu Barda, the candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and a friend of IBB. In 1999, he ran for the same position and won. He was re-elected in 2003. It is on record that Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was the first governor to publicly declare his assets.

In 2000 during his administration as governor, Katsina State became the fifth northern Nigerian State to adopt Sharia or Islamic law. In 2002, Amina Lawal, a woman from Katsina, was sentenced to death by stoning by a Sharia Court in the town of Bakori for committing adultery; the story attracted international attention. Her sentence was at first upheld by a court in the town of Funtua, and then overturned a year later following an appeal.

On the 16th and 17th of December 2006, Yar’Adua was chosen as the presidential candidate of the ruling PDP for the April 2007 election, receiving 3,020 votes from party delegates; his closest rival, Rochas Okorocha, received 372 votes. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua chose Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan then governor of Bayelsa State as his vice presidential candidate. He received the support of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo popularly known as “OBJ” because he was one of the few serving governors then with a spotless record, devoid of any suspicions or charges of corruption. He also belonged to the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), a powerful political block founded by his late brother Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who was also OBJ’s deputy during his military rule.

It is a truism to say that no study of the politics of Nigeria would distant President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s role as a man of fearless disposition, a catalyst for developmental changes. He was an epitome of dignity, selflessness and moral astuteness. Furthermore, death is the whip on the roadside, which must flog everyone who passes the road of life.

Finally, death, everyone knows is that external price everyone must pay, a sort of universal debt hanging on humanity, like a sword of Damocles’. When it strikes, it leaves a permanent scar on the psyche. It makes a heart to founder.

May Allah (SWT) grant him eternal rest in Al-jannat Firdaus and his family including all Nigerians the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, Amen.

Adieu Yar’Adua

President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua died Wednesday night at age 58 in the presidential villa in the capital, Abuja. His death was confirmed by presidential spokesman olusegun Adeniyi, according to the associated press.

The death which occurred at 9pm local time (2000 GMT) according to Adeniyi, follows a long illness that was surrounded by secrecy and intrigue

He has been battling acute pericaditis, an inflammation of the membrane around the heart, since November last year for which he received treatment at the king faisal specialist hospital and research centre in Juddah, Saudi Arabia.

It’s a shame that the drama surrounding president Yar’ adua’s illness has eclipsed the important contribution he made to Nigeria during his months in office. Notably he started the process of electoral reform and supported reform in the banking sector. Now the political maneuvering will shift to who will fill the vacant Vice- presidency with implications for the fast approaching 2011 elections.

Late president Yar’adua was a man of guerilla and also a man of substance, he single handedly brought the amnesty programme for Niger delta militant and it worked, he was a man of peace and wanted justice for all Nigerians.

The late president had always suffered some kind of sickness since becoming president, he had kidney problems and the latest bout of illness was related to a heart condition.

During his absence he failed to formally transfer his powers to his vice president, Good luck Jonathan, sparking a constitutional crisis in Nigeria, African’s most populous nation with 150 million people. Nigeria has lost the jewel on its crown and even the heavens mourn with our nation. As individuals and as a nation we prayed for the recovery of Mr. President. But we take solace in the fact that the Almighty is the giver and taker of all life.”

Under Nigeria’s constitution, Jonathan now becomes president until the next election scheduled to be held April 2011. He also will nominate a vice- president, subject to approval by the senate. Jonathan assumed the position or acting president on February 9 after a vote by Nigeria’s national Assembly while Yar’adua was still in Saudi Arabia.

The assembly left open the possibility for Yar’adua to regain power if he return to the country in good health, but his long absence from public life and the secrecy surrounding his health sparked months of fierce speculation in the Nigerian media and constant tension between his supporters and those of the acting president. Jonathan meanwhile, has consolidated his power, appointing a new cabinet and his own team of advisers’.

Yar’ Adua’s death comes at a difficult time for the country, following a spate of deadly clashes between Muslims and Christian in central Nigeria earlier this year which left hundreds dead. At the same time there has also been renewed unrest in the oil – rich Niger Delta in the country south.

Nii Akuetteh, the former executive director of Washington- based think tank Africa Action told at jazeera that Yar’ Adua pushed through electoral reforms and will be remembered as a clean president.

Finally, Yar’ adua we always be remembered as a clean and good president, may Allah {God) forgive the short coming of the late president, give the incoming president wisdom to drive this country to its dream land and give the family and Nigerians the fortitude to bear the loss (amen). This is a lesson to the rich, poor, noble, arrogant and every body at large, that” We all shall taste the agony of death. So do good, so that you will be remembered for that.

Commissioner laments lack of usage of government loan by small, medium scale enterprises

The Delta State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Azuka Osakwe has expressed worries over small and medium scale enterprises not taking advantage of the pool of funds by the state government and the Bank of Industry earmarked for industrial development.

The commissioner made this known at Bomadi during a sensitization workshop on the Delta State Government – Bank of Industry (BOI) Programme in the 25 Local Government areas of the state. Osakwe declared that small and medium enterprises are the bedrock of any industrial revolution, he noted that sustainable growth of any economy anywhere in the world depends largely on the industrial sector.

The commissioner who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Barr. Hycinth Osuhon, said the Delta state government and the Bank of Industry under a public private partnership had since April 2009, pooled funds together to the tune of N1 billion for onward lending to industrialists. According to the commissioner, it is sad that only less than 10% of this fund have been accessed by industrialists till date. The commissioner stated that those who are aware of the fund are not taking advantage of it on the grounds that the conditions are stringent.

He however promised that government is not only working at relaxing these conditions, but is also hoping to encompass other areas of concern, which hitherto do not qualify for this facility. He charged Deltans to take advantage of the fund by forming cooperatives of 10 cluster groups while government will try its best to ensure an enabling environment is created as well as provide easy access to credit facilities. According to the commissioner, more hardworking Deltans will be empowered and the human capital development agenda of Uduaghan administration will receive a boost.

The commissioner quipped that the fund is not for political patronage, even as he appealed to those who have benefited from the facility to strive to pay back as failure to do so will jeopardize the chances of industrialists and entrepreneurs who will want to benefit from the programme.

Other speakers at the ceremony include the Director of Co-operative department, Mr. Austin Enebeli and the Director of Small and Medium entrepreneurs, Mr. Patrick Isicheri who also emphasized the need for Deltans to come forward for the facility. The workshop also featured question and answer session where participants were cleared of their doubts. In attendance was the chairman of Bomadi local government, Hon. Prince Kalananama Penawou. He was represented by the Council’s Director of Personnel Management, Mr. Philip E. Agbayeke.

Chief Ezewu observed that membership in the area is low and stressed that more sensitization be carried out to increase the membership base of the division. The branch chairman while emphasizing the need for people in the area to be aware of the activities of the organization, said the organization requires members who have humanitarian feelings to sacrifice and provide assistance to victims of natural and human induced disasters.

Why Delta PDP is confident on one man, one vote – Tenumah

The recent campaign for one man, one vote by Delta State Peoples Democratic Party has been attributed to the strength of the party in all the nooks and crannies of Delta State.

This declaration was made by the Chairman, House Committee on Peace and Security in the Warri South legislative Arm, Hon. Kingsley Tenumah in an exclusive chat with Fresh Angle at the Warri South Council Secretariat. According to Hon. Tenumah who is popularly known as Afere, Nigeria has come of age and the state PDP want the people’s vote to count. “I’m a progressive, Nigeria has come of age to follow the trend worldwide. An example is neighbouring Sudan which conducted free and fair election. We want the people’s vote to count, hence the state government is keying into it”. He added, “it’s very glaring, you can see the handwriting on the wall, I dare to repeat that for now there’s no other party in Delta State other than the PDP. We want to prove to the people that we are really on ground. We are very confident that with one man, one vote the sky is the limit for Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan come 2011. There is no other party in Delta State, it is PDP! PDP! PDP! PDP! No other party! I stand to be corrected”.

On the controversy surrounding the appointment of a new national chairman for the PDP and the speculated ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan, Hon. Tenumah who is a member of Uduaghan campaign organization posited that he will not subscribe to the believe that the chairmanship has anything to do with the speculated ambition of President Jonathan in 2011.

While acknowledging that President Goodluck Jonathan has the constitutional right to contest for any position he desires, Hon. Tenumah who is also a member of sports committee in Warri South Legislative Arm, advised that for the South South geopolitical zone not to lose their opportunity, President Goodluck Jonathan, “should watch out carefully”, adding that people of the South South need to strategize, fall back home and think of a better time to contest, “because we will want to have our turn for 8 years too”.

Awankere festival is not fetish - Oki

The Public Relations Officer of Okere Community and councilor representing Esisi ward in Warri South Legislative Arm, Hon. David Oki has said that the Awankere annual festival is not fetish, but a unifying factor.

Hon. Oki made this declaration Wednesday June 9 in a chat with Fresh Angle during the evening section of day 2 of the popular Awankere festival held at the Okere market square.

The community image maker further explained that the annual festival serves as good forum for people of the community and other Itsekiris to embrace themselves as well as meet to discuss a common front for Iwere land.

He commended the Itsekiri people for holding firm to their dialect in spite of their age long history.

This year’s annual festival is tagged “Keeping Our Culture Alive”. Hon. David Oki while speaking to our correspondent on day 2 of the 5 market days event which usually runs for 5weeks, decried a situation where those who call themselves Christians do not partake in the festival due to the believe that it is fetish. The lawmaker refuted such believe, noting that he is also a practicing Christian who goes to church and carry on with the commandments of God.

Hon. David Oki while commending indigenes of Okere for speaking their language in spite of living close to other tribes, lamented the non participation of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in the festival, even as he called on the governor, tourists, politicians and notable Itsekiri sons and daughters to come out enmasse to partake in the grand finale of the event billed for Saturday July 3.

How Nigerian Premier League can be improved, Nwaeze, Greece based Nigerian soccer star explains

A Greece based Nigerian striker, Kristopher Ekene Nwaeze says the only way to improve Nigerian Premier league is by investing in academy to train upcoming talents as well as inject more funds on sports, particularly football.

The Delta born Cyprus based footballer who last played for City United, Warri before jetting out of the country in 2004, explained that it wasn’t easy at first to adapt to the weather condition in Russia five years ago when he first arrived at Locomotive Moscow, but had to cope when it became imperative that was the only way to kick start his career in Europe.

Kristopher Nwaeze who scored a total of 15 goals for his current Greece Club, Enad FC in the just concluded season is eyeing a move to Chelsea in the Barclays Premiership. The Ibusa born utility player who will rather not comment on racial discrimination faced by African footballers in less fancied European leagues, particularly in Russia is a striker who can play any role from the centre half. The 23 year old is calling on technical adviser of the Senior National team, Coach Lars Lagerback to look in his direction, as he “has all the qualities and willing to serve the country” whenever called upon.
