No going back on Governor Uduaghan in 2011 – Okudolor

Chief Vincent Jackson Okudolor epitomizes what a grassroots politician should be, apart from exerting absolute control of his immediate community and ward, Chief Vincent Okudolor interfaces perfectly with people of Warri South I and II constituencies.

In this no bar interview with our Editor-in-Chief, Ebule Anthony, the Warri South II House of Assembly hopeful bare his mind on the chances of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in the 2011 gubernatorial poll in Delta State as well as his resolve to lay claim to the Warri South Constituency II Seat in Delta State House of Assembly come 2011.

Excerpt:

You recently hosted a large gathering of PDP faithfuls and loyalists in your Ekurede Urhobo country home, what was it all about?

Thanks for that question! Let me use this medium to put the records straight. The purpose is to strengthen our familiarity and to show the world that all of us in Warri South, no matter the tribe and colour are one. It is also to remind our teeming followers and youths that it’s time to continue the fight that produced both Chief James Ibori as Governor and our incumbent Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan. If you would recall vividly, at the gathering, I told the cross section of Warri youths that by Uduaghan we stand no matter the odds and as far as I’m concerned it’s no going back on Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s return in 2011!

Let’s leave Dr. Uduaghan’s gubernatorial ambition and zero in on your House of Assembly aspiration. Do you really think you have a good chance, considering the caliber of other aspirants?

Well, I would rather not bother about other aspirants jostling for the Warri South Constituency II Seat. My focus is primarily on my aspiration which is people centered. You will agree with me that from what you saw when I hosted PDP faithfuls and loyalists at my residence, my popularity and acceptance is not in doubt. The fact that the new song of internal democracy which lays emphasis on one man, one vote will come to play in the party primaries give every aspirant equal opportunity to test his or her popularity no matter the status of that individual.

In-spite of your optimism, a lot of people out there believe that aspirants like you are not really serious in contesting, what’s your take on that?

We are in a free world, particularly in a democratic dispensation that we find ourselves, so every individual is entitled to their opinion. But I must note here that I have never been known to joke with anything I get involved in and it will be foolhardy for me to enjoy such popularity, spend so much money and time on my aspiration yet a few still see me as unserious.

I must however note here that in as much as my aspiration is well on course, I will humbly respect the decision of my party at the end of the primaries.

There are speculations that aspirants like you are being denied party registration, how true is that?

I don’t know where such speculations are coming from, but let me make it clear here that I am a well recognized PDP member with strong base, hence I will admonish all those spreading such rumour who I see as detractors to desist forthwith.

Why is it that all of you aspiring for different positions in the state are vying under the PDP platform?

Simple! There is no other political party in Delta State. Even all those claiming to be opposition are singing the PDP song, what that means is that there is no other party on ground in Delta State.

If given the mandate, what form of representation should the people of Warri South II Constituency expect from you?

Let me start by thanking you for that question. I will not like to bore you with long talk, but one confidence I have is that everyone in my constituency will be carried along if given the electoral mandate. My representation will be people centered, by this I mean that I will ensure regular consultation with people and all stakeholders of my constituency. Whatever bill I’ll sponsor in the floor of the House will not be my idea alone, but the collective will of people of Warri South II Constituency. Rather than encourage conflict with the executive, my representation will strive towards a workable synergy between the executive and the legislature that will bring about all round development to all ethnic groups in Delta State.

What’s your message to Deltans in general and people of Warri South II Constituency in particular?

Let’s continue to support the administration of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and give him our vote in 2011 to enable him consolidate on the achievements so far recorded via his 3 point agenda. My sincere appeal to people of Warri South II Constituency is to always remain behind the governor and give me their mandate in both the PDP primaries and the election proper in 2011.

Thanks for your time

You are welcome!

There is no zoning in Delta PDP – Guanah

The Present Delta State Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Hon. (Barr.) Raymos Bolowei Guanah can best be described as a seasoned politician. From his days as a student to Local Government Chairman, two time Special Adviser and now Commissioner, Barr. Raymos Guanah has proven himself as a technocrat and one with political savvy.

In this exclusive interview at his Asaba Office with our Editor-in-Chief, Ebule Anthony after a long pursuit and wait occasioned by Hon. Guanah’s busy schedule, the consummate politician spoke on his House of Assembly aspiration, political life, the contentious issue of zoning at the Presidency, Delta State as well as the clamour for new states to be created in the country.

We present the no bar interview uncensored.

Let’s know the face behind Hon (Barr.) Raymos Bolowei Guanah?

My name is Raymos Bolowei Guanah, I’m a lawyer by profession. I’m a politician today and by the grace of God I’m a Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Delta State.

Can you give us a brief history about your political life?

Let me say that my involvement in politics started long ago in college, I was a prefect, I went to Western Boys High School in Benin. Later I was a supporter of the UPN, though I didn’t play any role, I like their ideologies and supported them as well. I later became a member of the NRC when there were two political parties, I was NRC member in Ughelli, where I was leaving and practicing my law profession. And the government then said you could join the party anywhere you were, hence I joined the NRC in Ughelli. But much as I found out that via the pronouncement that you could join the party anywhere you were, there was still some level of sentiment that affected my involvement. I now moved to my local government, which was the then Bomadi where I joined the SDP. I was in the SDP until that era ended. Thereafter, I came back to my legal practice, when parties were formed I joined the Grassroots Democratic Movement (GDM), I was Chairman of the Party in Bomadi local government area.

When Patani was created out of Bomadi, I became Pioneer Chairman of GDM in Patani local government area and I became the party’s Chairmanship candidate in the local government. Then came an election, I keep telling people that I won that election but I was not declared winner, I went to the tribunal to contest it but when the tribunal went that era also ended abruptly. I joined the PDP from inception, I was the chairman of Patani local government area, I was elected chairman in 1998 and I served from 1999 to 2002. After my service the then governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori appointed me Special Adviser on local government matters for two and half years. Thereafter he appointed me Political Adviser, I was Political Adviser till the end of Chief James Ibori’s tenure. I am a member of the PDP, member of the campaign organization, we did all that needed to be done to make sure that PDP emerged victorious at the polls and the party emerged victorious and I was appointed Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development till date.

No doubt, your political history is quite lengthy, first as a local government Chairman, two-time Special Adviser and now Commissioner. If you are to assess, which of these positions will you say is most challenging?

I became Political Adviser towards the end of a transition when Chief James Ibori was to end his second tenure as governor and we were going to start a new face entirely. There were about 17 governorship aspirants on the platform of the PDP and at the end of the day I was made to co-ordinate these aspirants to several meetings with a view to see that we do not go to the polls in rancour, thereafter I was also involved in the process that led to the emergence of all the PDP candidates in the House of Assembly and National Assembly. All of them are challenging offices, but like I said as Political Adviser I was also involved in the Presidential elections both in the primaries and the elections proper, because whatever Delta has to do in Abuja as far as the convention was concerned, my office was involved. To that extent I had to relate with our members at the National Assembly, the ministers and ambassadors from Delta State origin.

Having been neck deep in politics, do you still have time to practice your legal profession?

Yes, I still read my law books, attend my Bar meetings, Bar conferences and I’m still a lawyer. If I have any opportunity, I will still go to court.

The issue of today is politicking, 2011 is getting pretty close. The other day I traveled to Patani I saw posters indicating your House of Assembly aspiration, let us hear from the horses mouth, are you really eyeing the Patani Constituency Seat in the State House of Assembly?

The answer is yes, I’m aspiring to represent Patani constituency in Delta State House of Assembly. There are no doubts about that, I intend to and have therefore put everything in place to ensure a smooth sail to that position.

But there are indications that virtually all the lawmakers in the present Delta State House of Assembly, particularly your constituency which has the Deputy Speaker, Hon Basil Ganagana want to return in 2011. Are you perturbed by that?

I have a pedigree, I have a record which I want to sell to the people. A record of service and a record of performance. As many people as possible can try to aspire to any position, there is nothing wrong with it and I encourage people to aspire, but I’m sure at the end of the day my constituency will determine who they want to represent them.

We can’t talk about politics without taking a peep at the national level, where do you stand on the issue of zoning?

From day one I have never believed that zoning should be a matter for discussion. The constitution that I read tells me that if any law runs contrary to the constitution that law is null. If the constitution gives every Nigerian right to contest any election into any office provided you are qualified, from any part of the country then I can leave here and go to Sokoto to contest provided I have lived there and meet the constitutional requirement. No political party constitution can bar anybody provided the constitution of the land has said otherwise, to that extent the PDP constitution is inconsistent with the Nigerian constitution. It’s not an issue for debate, because the country’s constitution is supreme.

Fine, but one argument that will always be canvassed is that zoning was cooked up to give every Nigerian a sense of belonging and if you are going to abandon it half way, don’t you think you are trying to generate a conflict of sentiment?

No matter how much long in time, if you practice what is wrong it is wrong.

From day one, the PDP decision to zone was against the constitution, but maybe because there were no issues then nobody talked about it. But now issues are on the table and it’s clear to us that what the PDP did was wrong, I’m aware the PDP is even taking steps to amend the constitution to remove that clause because it has become an issue.

All of you that are clamouring that zoning should be abolished at the Presidency election are not saying anything as it affects Delta State even though we all know there was an internal arrangement within the PDP frame that after Chief Ibori’s two tenure, Delta South should have their two tenure before Delta North, is that not zoning arrangement?

No, let me tell you something, in 2007 several persons contested elections under the platform of the PDP for the primaries, it was not a Delta South affair alone. Other people contested, I’m aware that Chief Ovie Omo-Agege from Delta Central contested the primaries, Chief Godswill Obielum from Delta North contested the primaries, Pius Ewherido, Chief Ibrude and a host of others across the three senatorial districts. And Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan emerged, if Ewherido had emerged we would have voted for him in the general election as the candidate of the PDP. If Godson Echejile from Delta North had emerged, we would have supported him too and even at the general elections, people came from Awka and all parts of Delta State to contest against the PDP candidate. So it’s clear to us, if there was zoning the way you are saying it, PDP would have limited the contest to only Delta South. As I talk to you, the PDP ticket is open to all parts of the state. And I don’t want to believe that we are practicing zoning, it’s possible for the purpose of convenience, but we won’t call it zoning. Personally I hold the view that in Delta State, the three senatorial districts should be allowed to have a go at the governorship, it’s not fixed to any party or constitution. I just believe that after Dr. Uduaghan’s two tenure as governor, power should go to Delta North.

… (cuts in) Hon. Commissioner, what will you call that?

It’s not zoning, it’s reasonable in a state like Delta.

(cuts in)…. Of course Delta is a miniature Nigeria.

We are being reasonable, that’s where we are.

The issue of State creation has come up again at the National Assembly. At the last count, at least 33 requests have been made, are you one of those that will subscribe to a state being carved out from the present Delta?

I love Delta State! Because from Asaba to Abare, to Ughelli, you can see that there’s a tread that ties us together. That is not to say that people should not agitate for state creation, agitation is natural. You know the process of creating a state is not just the way you are saying it, it’s a whole process. I don’t want to comment on the way and manner the constitution was amended recently where House of Assemblies across the country were hoodwink to accept what happened in Abuja. I tell myself that what happened was hoodwinking, the same way the National Assembly should have allowed the State Assemblies debate the amendment clause by clause like they did.

How are you going to cope with your House of Assembly aspiration and your busy schedule as Commissioner?

I will soon resign from this office because my party constitution enjoined me to resign if I want to run for an election, which is why I have not come to say I want to run for election. If you see anything going on in that regard it’s people urging me to run, once I make up my mind finally, I will definitely resign and go to the field. The truth is if I don’t resign it will affect my work, any person that want to run for any office, especially when you are appointed and not elected will have to resign so that it does not affect the person’s work

What’s your take on a certain group calling for dissolution of Delta State PDP Exco?

I don’t see any reason why the state PDP executive should be dissolved, I don’t see any reason.

Invariably, you people are ready for 2011?

Delta is ready for 2011.

Your last word sir…………

Deltans should be as peaceful as they have always been. We are very confident that with the one man, one vote campaign that is going on, Deltans will have the best in 2011.

Jega never made any pronouncement on the dissolution of Delta State PDP Exco – Agbajoh

By: Tonebsky Nesta

The Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party in Warri South local government, Mr. Amah Agbajoh has dismissed media reports credited to the new national Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega that the Peter Nwaboashi led executive of PDP in Delta State be dissolved.

The Warri South PDP Chairman refuted the report in an exclusive chat with Fresh Angle at the party secretariat in Warri, Delta State. Mr. Amah Agbajoh who was a two time chairmanship aspirant in Warri South local government averred that a group of people merely placed a document from INEC on the newspaper to cause dissatisfaction and confusion in Delta State against Dr. Uduaghan led PDP in the State.

According to him, the issue of Peter Nwaboashi led executive of the party in Delta State has come up at the NEC meeting even when Chief Vincent Ogbulafor was the National Chairman of the party and was only recently put to rest by the party NEC led by Chief Okwesileze Nwodo. He posited that all those agitating for fresh congress were “not even members of the party when we did our congress in 2008”. Mr. Agbajoh queried, “how can Kenneth Gbagi that says he’s in Labour Party talk of congress in the PDP”? The Warri South PDP Chairman declared that a group of people gather themselves together, gave themselves a name and use it to cause problem without even having followers. While explaining that the recent tour of his executive to the INEC 12 ward structure in Warri South local government is to sensitize the people and get more members for the party, the man popularly addressed as Up Warri debunked speculations that some aspirants in the area are being denied party registration because of their aspiration, stressing that the party is striving to see internal democracy, hence its campaign of one man one vote. On complaints that not much is being done in the area of empowerment by the state government, Mr. Amah Agbajoh explained that Governor Uduaghan has done much in the area of empowerment via micro credit and noted that the government cannot empower everyone but create an enabling environment. This according to him is what the governor has been doing in the last three years.

The Warri Bureau Chief of POINTER Newspaper, Dennis Otu has promised to lift the Warri Correspondents Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to a greater height if elected as the Chairman in the August 27th, 2010 election.

Speaking to newsmen on his Chairmanship ambition, the Journalist said that; “I have decided to contest for the Warri Correspondents Chapel Chairmanship position as a result of my deep rooted love and interest for the Chapel. I am one man, who has passion for the Warri Chapel of N.U.J. and if elected as Chairman in the forth coming election with God on my side, I will make the welfare of members a top priority because I do not believe that Journalists should go cap in hand begging for good things of life. Journalists are the watchdogs of the society and under my leadership if elected, journalists will take their pride of place in the society and will be respected anywhere they go.”

According to him; “I know that the challenges ahead are enormous and I am up to the task. I promise to build on the legacy of the outgoing administration led by Com. Ben Dunno of Leadership Newspaper.” “I am not one Journalist that will use my position as a Chairman if elected as a meal ticket, rather if elected; I will use the position to give a better deal to Journalists so that they will have a sense of belonging,” he said.

Mr. Otu advised members that they should see the August 27th election as a family affair and not a do-or-die affair, adding that they should be orderly in their conduct so that a credible election can be held and also for our “politicians who are warming up for the 2011 elections to borrow a leaf from our Chapel’s election. Our election on August 27, 2010 should be something for our politicians to learn from because Journalists are the mirror, watchdogs and the eyes of the society.”

Barclays Premiership:The Odds against Chelsea’s title defence

By: Tonebsky Nesta

The English Premiership may not be the most skilful in the globe, but it’s arguably the world’s most exciting league. At least the extensive and glamourous media coverage gives it an irresistible acceptance, hence the uncommon battle to win its coverage rights by leading cable television channels globally. The emergence of Chelsea as English Champion on the last day of the 2009/2010 season against expected last minute slip up by a few did not attract the much needed ovation by ardent followers of the Blues due to the nervy moments the team created in its build up to its eventual demolishing of Wigan on the last day of the league. The lack of excitement sterms largely from the lack of defensive and attacking depth, coupled with the ageing of the team’s reliables’ in these two areas. These lapses was what was roundly exposed by Manchester United in the FA Community Shield against Chelsea played recently at the new Wembley lush green turf. While Chelsea relied heavily on the ageing Nikolas Anelka and injury plagued Didier Drogba to provide it with goals at the front, Manchester United introduced Javier Hernandez to continue from where Wayne Rooney’s forays at Chelsea defence stopped. Both Wayne Rooney and the new Manchester United Mexican import, Javier Hernandez exposed the lack of pace of Chelsea defence occasioned by an ageing backline.

The only two signings Carlo Anceloti had made as at press time shows that the Italian and former AC tactician has not been able to identify the weak link in Chelsea. The choice of Anceloti to allow creative and hardworking Joe Cole go on free transfer to one of its rivals, Liverpool and sign Yossi Benayoun who obviously lacks pace and strength leaves much to be desired. Anceloti’s signing of Brazilian midfielder, Ramires from FC Porto when Chelsea was welcoming back Mikel Essien without really having noticeable defect at the centre also calls for questioning. The club’s academy should be able to provide at least a player to compliment its ageing players in that department. Another area that should give chronic Blues followers grey hair is the over reliance on goal tender, Peter Cech without a worthy substitute. While lack of fund remains an issue for Chelsea like its contemporaries in Europe, its reign as English Champion may suffer embarrassment if young, courageous and skillful players are not signed from other clubs or recruited from its reserve team. It must also be noted that the club management should give promising players like Daniel Sturridge and Gael Kalkuta enough playing time to give them confidence and bring out the best in them.

Warri South legislative leader backs Uduaghan for second term

By: Tonebsky Nesta

The Leader of Warri South legislative Arm, Hon. Sunday Aguweye has lend his voice to calls by prominent Delta Politicians calling on incumbent Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan to rerun for the state gubernatorial seat come 2011.

The lawmaker, who spoke to Fresh Angle in an exclusive chat in Warri, is an indigene of Okere Urhobo kingdom, Warri and he is representing Otor-Orere ward in the Warri South legislative Arm.

Hon Aguweye told Fresh Angle that he is leading his numerous followers to back Governor Uduaghan’s return bid. He described the governor’s 3 cardinal objectives of Peace and Security, human capital and infrastructural development as not just well thought out, but carefully and strategically implemented to the overall benefit of all Deltans no matter the primordial differences.

According to him, the manner with which the Governor has continually sustained the intra and inter ethnic harmony in the state in spite of obvious challenges is reflective of a political strategist that understands the dynamics as well as complexities of Deltans. The lawmaker posited that the governor’s multiple health programmes targeted at both children, women and the aged as well as his agricultural and technical base programmes aimed at youth development makes him the number one choice for all Deltans as far as 2011 gubernatorial poll in Delta State is concerned.

Hon. Aguweye was particularly delighted at the proficiency of grassroots governance across the state, this according to him is based on the well laid out structure put in place by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan as well as the responsive and responsible governance Dr. Uduaghan has always canvassed right from his days as Hon. Commissioner for Health. He challenged the few critics of the Governor to go round the state and see visible infrastructural as well as beautification projects scattered all over.

He was quick to mention the multi billion Asaba International Airport, Koko- Ugbenu dualisation project, proposed establishment of four new polytechnics to compliment existing ones as well as the revitalization of the hitherto comatose Warri Port as reasons why Dr. Uduaghan should enjoy overwhelming support of Deltans in 2011 gubernatorial elections.

Political Offices:Egbema Ijaws vow to tackle their Itsekiri neighbours over perceived marginalization

From: Udu
By: Omonigho Matthew

President of the Coalition of Egbema Democrats (CEDE) Comrade Doyah Tiemo Clement has vowed that the Egbema Ijaws in Warri North local government area will produce the Council Chairman, House of Assembly member and other political office holders in 2011, even as he accused its Itsekiri neigbour of marginalization in the council.

Comrade Doyah Tiemo Clement said the Ijaws have been marginalized by their Itsekiri brothers due to the lopsidedness of political positions shared between the two ethnic groups. The issue he said is now generating a lot of controversies between the Ijaws and Itsekiris.

The Warri North local government which was created in 1991 according to Comrade Doyah Tiemo, has twenty wards with the Itsekiris having eleven wards and key political positions while the Ijaws only have nine wards.

He said since the creation of the local government, the highest position the Ijaws have ever held was that of the vice chairman and councilors. He alleged that the present chairman, secretary, leader of the legislative arm of the council is all from Itsekiri ethnic Nationalities.

Comrade Doyah Tiemo also alleged that the commissioner representing the council area in the state executive council, House of Assembly and federal constituency are also Itsekiris, adding that officers and staff of the local government on grade level 06 and below were appointed by the council chairman and those on grade level 07 and above appointed by the Delta State local government service commission are all Itsekiris. He added that the head of personnel management, finance and supplies (treasury), works, primary health care, environment, agriculture, education, community development and legal departments are all Itsekiris.

He stated that “out of the eight hundred and one staff” in the council, only twenty eight are Ijaws, alleging that all appointments were made contrary to the provision of the Delta State local government, cap 131 section 63, sub-section (4).

Comrade Doyah Tiemo said the Ijaws in Warri North have lived in this condition for nineteen years (1991-2010) and can no longer tolerate such marginalization.

Comrade Doyah Tiemo also used the medium to solicit the assistance of the Forum for Justice and Human Right Defense to ensure that the Ijaws in Warri North are no longer relegated to second class citizens in the political arena of the local government, State and Nigeria at large. He appealed to Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan to address the issue once and for all.

Orubebe makes surprise appearance to Oritsejafor’s church

By: Jolomi Okotie

In what is being seen by political pundits as a move to woo the support of recently elected National President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe on Sunday August 1, made a surprise appearance to Word of Life Bible Church in Warri.

Elder Orubebe’s appearance at Word of Life Bible Church which is founded by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor a day after himself and other prominent Nigerians had a breakfast meeting at the Nation’s Capital, Abuja, may not be unconnected with the huge political and social influence the church which is arguably the fastest in Delta State has on the intriguing politics of the state. The former Ibori aide who is speculated to be eyeing the Delta State gubernatorial seat in 2011 was accompanied by a former Chairman of defunct Warri local government and scion of the Omatseye dynasty, Hon. Sonny Omatseye among others.

Both the Honourable Minister who some group of Itsekiri young men acting under the auspices of Itsekiri Regional Development Council recently accused of deliberately marginalizing Itsekiri and other ethnic nationalities to the advantage of the Ijaws in the sitting of NDDC projects and his bosom friend, Hon. Sonny Omatseye who is also rumoured to be eyeing a senatorial ambition in 2011 sat from the beginning of the second service of the church till the about 12:30pm when the service ended.

Two female lawmakers in Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. (Mrs.) Omawumi Udoh who is a member of Word of Life Bible Church, Princess Ajidua and the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara, three of whom are staunch loyalists of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan were in service when Pastor Ayo acknowledged Orubebe’s presence.

The newly elected CAN National President who also doubles as second time PFN National President did not end the service without using the opportunity to bare his mind on the on-going federal government’s amnesty programme for ex-militants.

According to the widely traveled preacher, the only hole in the post amnesty programme is the lack of involvement of Men of God. Pastor Oritsejafor advised the Minister of Niger Delta who he described as a man of God to use his office to ensure that Preachers of the Word of God are incorporated in the on-going training of ex-militants so as to ensure all round re-orientation as well as development of their minds.

Group petitions Senate President over prolonged casualization of teachers in NNPC staff school

By: Special Correspondent

A Delta based Non Governmental Organization, Golden Torch has petitioned the Senate President, Senator David Mark over 22 years old casualization of mostly Delta indigenous staff of NNPC staff school in Warri.

In the petition titled, “save us from human bondage,” the group accused the NNPC management of “cruelty” and favouritism in the employment of their cronies who are neither qualified nor have the relevant experience. They further alleged that of the 26 years of existence of the Warri staff school, the corporation, “has employed workers/teachers on permanent basis in the NNPC Towers Abuja and posted to school and other Strategic Business Unit (SBU)”.

A spokesman of Golden Torch, Mr. Amaechi Ogbonna told Fresh Angle that the affected teachers who have allegedly been on casualization for 23years are currently handicapped in the labour market as a result of advancement in age.

The petition further revealed that the affected casual teachers are presently being paid fifty five thousand naira (N55,000.00) without allowances such as transport, health, accommodation as well as Christmas bonus and refusal to pay “the ten percent (10%) yearly increment”. The group also noted in their petition that in a bid by the NNPC management in Warri to shy away from the issue, it recently hired a firm, Light-House Petroleum Engineering Company as pay master to the affected causal teachers. According to the group, the result of a deceptive tactics in the form of interview organized in 1996 to regularize the appointment of the affected teachers is still unknown.

They are particularly concerned that the 2003 December regularization trip to the NNPC Tower Abuja only resulted “in giving permanent appointment to very few who have god-father, husband and relations in the system in June 2004”. They appealed to the Senate President to intervene by asking the NNPC management to confirm their appointment and pay them their allowance for the number of years they have put in the services of the NNPC staff school.

Attempt to get words from Mr. Olegunleko B.A., Zonal Manager of NNPC Zonal Office in Warri to react to the petition met an uncouth response, as all he did was denied knowledge of the petition and referred our reporter to the group Managing Director of NNPC in Abuja.

Fresh Angle investigations reveal that the NNPC staff school in Warri presently has 27 permanent teachers, 16 of which were engaged from other areas and either deployed or transferred from their stations at the expense of the casual staff between 1992 and 2004.

Father of twins suffer losses, as inferno razes several shops, automobile workshops

By: Tonebsky Nesta

An Imo State born father of female twins, Mr. Oliver Obiaguncha was among several victims that suffered huge losses in the inferno that consumed vehicles, heavy duty machines and other valuables in the Effurun end of Airport road by St. Mary off Okotoru Street, Ugboroke near Warri.

The incident which started on Sunday July 25 very late in the night continued till the wee hours of Monday July 26, leaving all the items and valuables destroyed in spite of joint efforts of fire servicemen from both the Shell Petroleum Development Company and the State government.

Fresh Angle news crew that dashed to the scene of the incident at about 10am Monday July 26 saw some of the victims and sympathizers in utter disbelief as pockets of smoke littered the environment. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained by the victims and onlookers spoken to, but preliminary estimation puts the cost of the losses at well over twenty million naira.

Mr. Oliver Obiaguncha told Fresh Angle that he was alerted at about 11pm but on getting to the scene, he discovered that his entire electrical appliances and carpentry tools, including the new stock he purchased two days earlier were completely damaged. The father of 6 children, who has been doing business in the area for over 8 years, puts the cost of his damage at over eight hundred thousand naira.

Another victim, Mr. Jonah Udi corroborated the claims of other victims that the cause of the inferno was not known as at press time, even as he added that where the fire started from could also not be ascertained.

According to Mr. Udi who owns one of the mechanic workshops, 4 vehicles were among vital valuables that were lost in the late night fire. He explained that though some owners of the vehicles have been contacted and have come to see things for themselves, there have been no formal reactions from them.

Mr. Eziachi Chioma, manager of one of the affected business concerns, declared that fabricating machines, generators, drilling machines and other expensive tools valued at over 6million naira were destroyed by the fire.

No government official had visited the scene when our news crew arrived, but all the victims spoken to expectedly pleaded with the relevant government agencies to come to their rescue.

Fresh Angle investigations reveal that machinist, sprayer and panel beater workshops as well as tiles, tailoring and provision shops were completely razed in the incident even though no life was lost.

Our grouse is against Orubebe, not Ijaw nation

By: Tonebsky Nesta

The 23 Itsekiri oil producing communities in Delta State under the auspices of Itsekiri Regional Development Committee have made it clear that their grouse is against the Honourable Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe and not with their Ijaw neighbours.

Their position was made known Tuesday July 20 at the Itsekiri Regional Development Committee, IRDC, Secretariat in Warri during a protest cum press conference addressed by chairman of the IRDC, Mr. Mofe Pirah in the presence of executive members of the IRDC, National Chairman of Itsekiri National Youth Council, Hon. David Tonwe and hordes of Itsekiri women and youths.

According to Mr. Mofe Pirah, Orubebe’s “venom against the Itsekiri remains boundless to such ridiculous extent of not considering our land for a single project despite our status as the first oil producing ethnic nation in Delta State”. He accused the Hon. Minister of moving 20 housing units allocated for Itsekiri ethnic nation from Ode-Itsekiri to Ijaw area on the excuse that the Itsekiri will be considered for the second phase. He further explained that Itsekiri protested to President Goodluck Jonathan who according to him directed the immediate reversal of Elder Orubebe’s action. The IRDC Chairman alleged that contractors already given mobilization monies have refused to mobilize to site and the Honourable Minister “has refused to compel”, them to start work.

While noting that Itsekiri is not the only ethnic group “short changed by Elder Orubebe”, Mr. Pirah opined that it will amount to suicide if the Itsekiri oil producing communities close their eyes and keep quiet while “an individual like Elder Godsday Orubebe has unrepentantly opted to subject” them to “untold injustice and orchestrated under development”. The Itsekiri oil producing communities also called on the federal government to incorporate their indigenes who participated in the disarmament exercise in the proposed training of 13,000 ex-militants overseas.

The press release which was signed by 26 persons, including former Warri South West Council Chairman, Hon. David Tonwe among 4 point demands, called for the immediate construction of the Naval Forwarding Base slated for Madangho as well as the categorization of all advertised projects to be undertaken by the Minister of Niger Delta on State basis when advertising and in multi-ethnic states like Delta, the benefiting communities should also be outlined on ethnic basis.

Governor Uduaghan, Ubulu-Uku Government Hospital: Worthy of Commendation

By: Charles Ikedikwa Soeze,

In beginning this feature, I have to quote Socrates (470-399 BC) who said “I cannot teach anybody anything; I can only make them think”. In other words, with the developmental strides across the state, Deltans can now think whether there are great achievements or not in the Uduaghan’s administration in Delta State.

In addition, the people of Aniocha South Constituency and Ubulu Clan in general should also think whether their representative in the Delta State House of Assembly, Honourable (Mrs.) Amaechi Mrakpor performed competently well or not. From my own point of view, I think and believe that if it is possible for the dead Deltans to wake up and vote, they must vote in favour of these duos. If that is the case, one can now think what the living Deltans will do.

Obviously, for the duo, I think it may be appropriate to quote Plato in his masterpiece on Marcus Aurelius (AD 121- 80) who argued that the just state is ruled by the ones who know the Good, and at the top is the philosopher-king, a man born and quite literally bred to rule. Then, why can’t we think towards this direction on the current governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan? This is because truth is constant, does not wobble, and it requires no clutches. That is, it must be clearly seen and Deltans have seen the massive development in the state generally.

Furthermore, one can now move without fear of being molested or robbed on streets of the urban areas because of functional street lights executed by the current administration of Delta State. It is also on record that the same administration has drastically reduced the sufferings of Deltans on transport. With the provision of vehicles, the people of the state now move about their normal businesses by paying subsidized fare to board any Delta State vehicle. Happily enough these vehicles have air-conditions. Previously, people can only enter air-condition vehicle unless if they were being giving ride by the owner. However, today in Delta State air-condition vehicle is now for every Tom, Dick and Harry based on the intelligence and magnanimity of our governor. All these, I think and believe are worthy of commendation. There is also vast improvement in the health-care delivery system of the state. The government hospitals in Delta State are no longer mere consulting rooms or mortuary. Deltans can all believe that the Uduaghan’s 3-point agenda is not just a paper work but being implemented fully for the benefits of all. What about roads and bridges including other projects handled by the governor in all parts of the state?

I also think and believe this is the time for all Deltans for critical reappraisal and restrategizing to ensure that the millennium development goals (MDGs) of the state are achieved. The only way to achieve these is by rededication to duties and services by all Deltans both at home and in the Diaspora, and above all, loyalty and commitment to the cause of the state.

Ubulu-Uku, the latest town in Delta State with a government hospital, is situated some thirty kilometres (30 kms) west of the River Niger in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, eastwards; it shares a boundary with Ogwashi-Uku; westwards, with Obior; northwards with Issele-Uku and southwards, with Ubulu-Unor.

Statistical data shows that the people of Ubulu-Uku are the largest in the old Aniocha Local Government let alone Aniocha South Local Government. The people of Ubulu-Uku are economic, social and educational giants in their own right. Their spirit mercantilism and commercial dexterity including farming, original palm wine tapping, and traditional weaving of cloth (akwa-ocha) among others have made them universally ubiquitous.

Ubulu-Uku is a hilly town that could be easily compared to Agbor in Delta State, Auchi in Edo State and Ibadan in Oyo State. This hilly nature of the town accounts for the serious problem of erosion, which the town currently faces. The problem has made some of the streets impassable and completely out of use. However, thanks to the current administration in Delta State under the able and agile leadership of Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan and some other philanthropic, responsible and respectable people from Ubulu-Uku who contributed immensely and energetically to solving in some areas the devastating erosion menace in the kingdom. However, we need to do more and we do believe that the Delta State Government (DTSG) can also do better so that the people of Ubulu-Uku will not one day become a refuge in their own country as a result of devastating erosion menace.

It is abundantly clear that the ancient town of Ubulu-Uku nay Ubulu Clan had its origin dated back to the 12th century. From records, there were two villages under the leadership of two different men. One is called “Anugwe” and the other “Ekei”. Anugwe’s settlement is at the eastern part of the town known as Abuedo popularly referred to as “Abuisiyi”, which could be translated “first among equals”. While Ekei is at the western end of the empty space, then and currently known as “Ani Ekei”. Currently, many villages and quarters have emerged in Ubulu-Uku and Ubulu clan.

History revealed that for a long period of time, before the coming of the white-man, Anugwe the great Agriculturalist who believed in feeding properly his people took farming seriously and produced enough for consumption. As a result of this, he rejected intoto the issue of kingship because due process was not followed and he refused to protest against the ‘deal’ in order not to fuel crises in the kingdom because he believed in peaceful co-existence and producing enough food for his people and Ubulu Clan generally.

One can boldly, proudly and holistically say that Anugwe cooperated with everybody and partners in progress honestly and with open mind to make the people of the kingdom remain peaceable. Happily, this is still in place currently because Ubulu-Uku town has remain peaceful no youths restiveness and aggressiveness popularly referred to as “gbege” in some parts of Delta State. Anugwe never at any stage doubted his men. He was a gentleman and a progressive leader to the core who was kind almost to a fault. This could be clearly seen among his children.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Managing Trustee of Morgan Smart Development Foundation, Dr. Omawumi Urhobo disclosed that micro credit is a grant and not a loan.
