5% of Nigerians suffer from diabetes, medical practitioner reveals

A medical practitioner, Dr. Bamigbola Ashemudiara says 5% of Nigerians now suffer from diabetes as against 2% in the previous years due to bad eating and drinking habits.

The Ondo State based medical practitioner drop the hint while giving a health talk during the opening ceremony of a two-day programme on Diabetes and Hypertension held at the Ubeji Town Hall in Warri Wednesday September 22. Dr. Ashemudiara who noted that people with excessive weight are prone to diabetes, advised Nigerians to go for medical check up at least once every six months to know their health status. He disclosed that diabetes kills more than HIV and malaria.

The Chairman of Warri South local government, Hon. Mofe Edema in a message enjoined residents of the area to take advantage of the 2-day free test, treatment and counselling being offered by the NGO. Hon. Edema who was represented by the Warri South Supervisor for Health, Mr. Aboyowa Amiwero, pledged the council’s commitment towards ensuring the success of the programme.

Earlier in an opening address, the Ondo State Co-ordinator of Woman’s Plights Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, Mrs. Edna Ohunayo explained that diabetes and hypertension are silent killers, which have contributed to deaths and early deaths in Africa. She averred that diabetes and hypertension related ailments as well as deaths are traceable to late discoveries. The WRAPA Co-ordinator commended the Chairman of Warri South local government, Hon. Mofe Edema, the Council’s Supervisor for Health, Mr. Aboyowa Amiwero, Ubeji Community and the entire people of Warri South local government for their support towards the success of the programme.

High points of the two day programme were the administering of free drugs to patients and the offering of counselling services by WRAPA’s health personnel.

Over one thousand persons benefited from the 2-day free health programme put together by WRAPA in collaboration with some co-operate partners.
