Itsekiri moves against inclusion in proposed Ijaw State

By: Tonebsky Nesta

The proposed Torobe State being canvassed by Ijaws of Delta State is facing stiff opposition from their Itsekiri neighbours, Fresh Angle can authoritatively report.

The proposed state which will annexe some coastal Ijaw and Itsekiri communities in the 3 Warri local governments and some others from Ijaw dominated local governments in both Delta, Ondo and Edo States is speculated to be enjoying the nod of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Feelers reaching Fresh Angle reveals that the grouse of their Itsekiri neighbours is the inclusion of some of their communities, including those purportedly seized by the Ijaw during the protracted Warri crisis.

The Itsekiris are said to be even more apprehensive due to non consultation before drawing up the proposal.

The position of the Itsekiri people which Fresh Angle reliably gathered is being articulated by its apex body, Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, ILF, was allegedly brought to the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan during a recent consultation visit to Pan Yoruba Socio-cultural body, Afenifere, to drum up support for his Presidential bid come 2011. The President who we gathered faced similar challenge from the Benin monarch reportedly promised to address the issue.
