Social Commentator charges Nigerian youths to remain focus

By: Charles Ikedikwa Soeze,

Nigerian youths have been called upon to remain focus and avoid negative tendencies like laziness, cult activities, hooliganism, immoral acts, as well as illicit businesses that would affect their health and future career.

The Chief Officer (Administration) in the Directorate of Registry, Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria Mr. Charles Ikedikwa Soeze made the statement recently on the occasion of the celebration of youths day by the Catholic Youths Organization of Nigeria (CYON) of our Lady Seat of Wisdom Catholic Chaplaincy (PTI), Effurun.

Soeze, who was father of the day, added that only morally upright and God-fearing youths can play meaningful role in the society.

He disclosed that most of our youths who are supposed to be our future leaders are currently serving various jail terms as a result of their unruly and illegal behaviour.

The father of the day pointed out that as they climb the ladder of success, diligence must be their only guide along the path. He warned that precious time wasted cannot be regained based on an adage which states “opportunity comes but once”.

The Chief Officer (administration) who is a mass communication scholar regretted that Nigeria remains a sleeping giant in Africa due to her failure to properly harness and develop her abundance of latent human resources, as a result of which youths remain incapacitated, indolent, under-developed and potentially depressed. The average Nigerian youths of today, he went on, are faced with fear, hopelessness, unemployment, hunger, frustration and confusion among many others.

Soeze categorically stated that the pre-colonial African society of which modern Nigeria was an integral part recognized humility, respect for elders, excellence, communal laws, selflessness, morality and diligence.

While concluding his address, the mass communication scholar said we cannot continue to pretend and worship at the altar of ignorance noting that our generation must not be allowed to be a wasted one.

His words “What we need therefore, is to allow democracy to take its full form and force, first at the national level from where it will eventually spread to all parts of our national life. Only then will the youths learn and be prepared as leaders of tomorrow”.

Also addressing the youths, Mrs. Comfort Oghenejode advised them to avoid comparison among themselves because some are from wealthy home, while others are from poor background. To this end, she further advised them to remain dedicated, committed and disciplined in order to become successful in life.

Earlier in his welcome address, the president of the CYON, PTI Chapel, Brother Humphrey Okaiman disclosed that the celebration happened all over the world. He made it known that it was directed by his Holiness Pope John Paul II (of blessed memory) in recognition of all catholic youth members worldwide.

The Chaplain, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Jude Obiunu and others were present to grace the ceremony.
