Bomadi council chairman reiterates commitment to sensitize residents on sanitation.

The Chairman of Bomadi local government area, Hon. Prince Kalanama Penawou has reiterated his administration’s resolve to continually mount enlightenment campaigns to sensitize the people of Bomadi to be more committed in the cleaning of their surroundings at all times.

This vow was contained in a statement made while monitoring July environmental sanitation exercise held in the local government area. The chairman who was represented by the Supervisor for Environment, Mr. Jackson Okodojo, said his administration will always carry the message of the importance of clean environment to the door steps of the people.

Penawou warned that hard times await those who are in the habit of dumping refuse indiscriminately in public places, thereby blocking natural waterways. He commended residents for their large turn-out, noting that the impressive participation in the exercise was the fruit of the aggressive enlightenment campaign strategy his administration employed to create awareness across the local government area.

The council boss expressed worries over the recent flooding that occurred in Bomadi town after a heavy down pour that lasted for 4 hours, leaving many residents displaced. He added that in a bid to avert a repeat occurrence, the council embarked on opening up of silt-up drainages, channeling of waterways and massive evacuation of refuse.

Hon. Penawou also noted that his administration would stop at nothing in ensuring that programmes put in place to deal with environmental issues are adequately funded. The Bomadi council boss who was accompanied by the Chairman, House Committee on Environment in the Bomadi Council Legislative Arm, Hon. Awusa Gbekubo and other staff of the environment department, advised the people to imbibe the habit of cleanliness and make it a daily routine.

Our Correspondent who monitored the clean up report that at the busy Bomadi Over side, residents were seen clearing overgrown bushes on undeveloped plots of land and scooping up dirt. Also at Amatebe and Obrigbene quarters respectively, the exercise was marked by a large turn-out of enthusiastic residents who were seen evacuating refuse. One of the participating residents, Mr. Binaebi Ewurudje, commended the council chairman for the recent evacuation of refuse as well as the opening up of blocked drainages in the town. Mr. Binaebi however appealed to the relevant government agencies to place refuse bins at strategic locations in the town so as to encourage decent waste disposal behaviour by residents of the town.

Meanwhile, the mobile sanitation court sitting in Bomadi presided over by Chief Magistrate Aforkeya Obomejero prosecuted 47 persons for flouting sanitation orders. 42 persons were fined for different offences, while 5 persons were freed.

Fresh Angle can also report that goods displayed during the period were seized by the sanitation officials.
