Ahead of the 2011 general elections, a group identified simply as Delta Democratic Platform, DDP, has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure the provision of a credible voters’ register, even as it demanded that the voice of the Nigerian electorates must be heard in the 2011 polls.
The group which is a grassroots non-partisan democratic organization also charged INEC to evolve an electoral process that would ensure the sanctity of one man, one vote as well as a secured environment and responsible officials that will make for a credible election in the country.
The DDP in a statement signed by its national Chairman, Mr. Edward Omagbemi, Vice, Prophet Paul Okotie and Secretary, Mr. Godwin Iboro respectively, maintained that with all its deficiencies, they have the unshaken belief that democracy is and still remains the best form of government for Nigeria.
The statement further said every vote that is properly cast must count in deciding who wins an election, insisting that every eligible citizen must be reached, sensitized and allowed to register, just as all elected political office holders must be made accountable to both the electorate and the constitution of the country. “It is expedient that more than ever before we must all as committed citizens ensure that INEC midwifes a free, fair and credible election in 2011. And the DDP is willing to partner with other organization towards achieving these laudable objectives for the overall benefit of the country”, the statement noted.
