Proprietor canvasses teaching of cultural languages in schools

The Proprietor of Jesse International School, Engr. Joel Okolakpa has called on Nigerian parents as well as private school owners to teach their wards cultural languages.

Engr. Joel Okolakpa said this at the first Annual Children Xmas Carol and End of Year Party held recently at the school premises in Warri.

According to him, it is a misnomer for Nigerian parents to speak western language, particularly English language to their wards without speaking their mother tongue to them. He described foreign languages as borrowed and called on private school owners to include the study of indigenous languages in their curriculum as done by Jesse International School.

This he said will go a long way to teach the pupils more of their language and culture. He also advised parents to always speak their language at home to their wards.

Engr. Joel Okolakpa who spoke exclusively to Fresh Angle shortly after display of some Nigerian cultures, also used the medium to call on government at all levels to take a critical look at the grey areas in the Nigerian Educational System to avoid further decline. He also noted that the school which will resume January 30, 2011 for second term has admission vacancies in Creche, Pre-Nursery, Nursery, Primary 1-5 and JSS 1-2.

Earlier, Miss Ayiri Atigolo identified education as the only means through which a child can be made relevant. She said this can only be achieved educationally through a curriculum that is allowed to work. She added that the curriculum needs to be socially relevant to meet up the increasing demands of the society as well as for the development of the total man.

Meanwhile, Principal of the school, Mr. Samuel Mukoro has commended the proprietor, Engr. Joel Okolakpa for providing every item used for the first Annual Children Xmas Carol and End of Year Party. In one word he described Engr. Okolakpa as a generous giver.

Highpoints of the event which lasted several hours were nine lessons and carol, poem demonstration/recitation, cultural dances and presentation of gifts to the pupils.
