Boat mishap claims 10 lives in Warri River

No fewer than ten persons who went to Ogidigben to register in the just concluded voter registration exercise lost their lives in boat mishap, Fresh Angle gathered from sources.

An eye witness said the victims finished the registration and were on their way back to Aladja where they came from when the incident occurred.

According to the source, the boat collided with another one as a result of alleged reckless speed. The source added that it will serve as a warning to others who would want to sell their right for a token.

Prior to the incident, rumour within Aladja has it that in some Ijaw riverine area and Itsekiri areas people were paid various sums of money to get registered. Edward, a student of one of the higher institutions who was due to go back to school few days later was among the casualties. Fresh Angle gathered that Edward usually gets N8,000.00 every month as rents from his father’s building for his upkeep as well as payment for his personal expenses by a caretaker.

An NYSC member who worked with INEC in one of the polling units, while pleading anonymity said he even saw 3 Aladja boys came from Ogbe-Ijoh with financial inducement. He also alleged that the DDC machine for Amasoma ward was smuggled into Aladja to register Amasoma people in Aladja.
