Delta NUJ: Screening Committee pledges credible polls

The Credentials Committee of Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists have pledge their desire to conduct a credible election in the March 2 State NUJ poll.

Chairman of the Committee, Barr. Albert Oshogbo who spoke during a sensitization tour of Warri Correspondents’ chapel explained that the rationale behind the sensitization tour is to spell out the rules guiding the elections to members. He added that they don’t want to exclude anyone unjustifiable nor include anyone who is not supposed to be included in the elections. The reason he said is because they don’t want the election to end controversially but in peaceful manner. Much as the credentials committee of the NUJ wants to be transparent in conducting peaceful and credible elections, Barr. Albert Oshogbo declared that the credentials committee cannot do it all alone. He therefore used the medium to solicit the support of members in the forthcoming election of the state NUJ.

He also announced that vacancies exist for chairmanship, vice chairman, state secretary, treasurer, financial secretary and auditor. In line with the 2005 NUJ constitution, Barr. Oshogbo said all members vying for any of the positions must be an active member, possessing a minimum of at least Higher National Diploma or Bachelors Degree in Mass-Communication/Journalism from recognized institutions. While those with other disciplines who have obtained Masters Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Mass-Communication are also qualified. Particularly, those who has been practicing journalism since 1992 in accordance with article 3 of NUJ constitution.

To be a candidate for any of the positions stated above, there are other stringent conditions to meet. They must be in good financial standings and must have paid their professional dues to date, in addition to submission of two passport photographs, curriculum vitae, credentials for registration as a member of NUJ and must be actively involved in the practice of journalism for at least 7years. Barr. Oshogbo added that aspirants for any of the positions must have worked in any chapel and must have attended reasonable number of meetings to be eligible.

Responding, Secretary of the Credentials Committee and Chairman of the Warri Correspondents’ chapel, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu and Mr. Akpokona Omafuaire of Vanguard Newspaper thanked the Credentials Committee for the visit and pledged their resolve to work with the committee in other to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

Other members of the credentials committee are; Broad Robins Oghomu, Festus Ahon, Okobi Benson, Sunny Egede and Bebefia Ogbemi.
