Valentine: Group moves against premarital sex

A group known as the Young People of Africa on Saturday February 12, in Lagos rallied against premarital sex on valentine day.

The match led by the founder of the group who doubles as the spokesperson, Mr. Emmanuel Ola-Abraham saw participants carrying placards with inscriptions such as 'condom must not sell', 'share the love and not the sex', 'parents monitor your children on Val’s day', 'Val’s day is not a world sex day', 'you can share love without sex', 'say no to premarital sex', 'Val is good’ and ‘premarital sex is bad'.

Our Lagos Bureau Chief reports that spokesperson of the group, Emmanuel Ola –Abraham noted that YPA is in partnership with another group called Solomonic in fighting against what he described as rampage of premarital sex.

He noted that the rationale behind the rally was as a result of a research the group conducted during last year's valentine. According to him, ‘'a lot of premarital sex happens because the young people believe that it is a day for them to have sex. Virgins are deflowered on this day”, he added.

He opined that the concept behind valentine “is to show kindness, love and show the kind of love St. Valentine lived for not sex”. In his words, “what we are saying is that this year's valentine should not be a world sex day. It should be a day to show love, so share the love and not the sex”.

According to him, 'the ideal way of celebrating valentine is by going to orphanages, showing them love, kindness, care and reaching out. “The reason St. Valentine was given this day was because of the love and care he gave to mankind”, he added.

He opined, “If you really love, show that love to someone that does not deserve or expect it. Go to the less privileged in the society and show them love, show love to the beggars, let them know that something is happening today. They are the people that valentine is meant for not for lovers”.

He however quipped that premarital sex should not be done even after valentine day celebration.
