Man 36, three children, die over sale of community land

A 36 year old man and three of his children were confirmed dead following a two day violence that recently pitched youths against their fathers over N30m land sale proceed at Ogunu community in the oil rich city of Warri, Delta State.

Our Correspondent reports that violence broke out between youths and elders of the community recently when the security agencies were invited to restore normalcy in the community over the crisis and in the process one Sunny Ejejigbe was allegedly shot in the head by an unknown security agent amongst the squad dispatched to restore peace in the community.

Fresh Angle gathered that trouble started when the youths demanded for the proceeds of the sales of community land from the elders who assured that the money was intact, but after several attempts by the elders to produce the money failed, the angry youths took law into their hands.

The parcel of land was allegedly sold to a very expensive private school in Warri where children of most oil multinational workers attend.

Security sources disclosed that the angry youths then mobilized and threatened to burn down the houses of the elders. The sources added “as they touched the house of one of them and were proceeding to those of others, the elders invited the police”.

It was gathered that the police on arrival shot sporadically into the air before the situation was brought under control and peace was allowed to reign with the support of armed policemen stationed at strategic positions in the community.

Divisional Police Officer “A” Division, Mr. Okon Effiong, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) confirmed the incident but denied that the deceased was shot by a police man from his Division as many squads were sent to the troubled area.
