Editorial The Need to Check the Upsurge of lunatics in Warri

Editor-In-Chief

The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary in one of its definitions, describes lunatic as “a person who does crazy things that are often dangerous”. If this simple but serious definition of what a lunatic is anything to go by, then authorities of Delta and Warri South local governments as well as other stakeholders, including NGOs should be worried about the sudden invasion of major streets of the oil city of Warri by mad men and women from unknown destinations in the last 7 months. It may sound laughable or absurd, but it seems the evacuation of destitute and lunatics from streets of Lagos State by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola has become the albatross of Delta, particularly Warri even though there were contrary reports of where those evacuated from the streets of Lagos were taken to by the man arguably referred to as the best performing Governor in Nigeria.

A vehicular drive from the popular Effurun roundabout in Uvwie local government area of Delta State through the NPA Express way alongside Edjeba, Ugbuwangue, New Port gate, Miller water side, Warri Main Market up to Enerhen junction end of the famous Warri Sapele Road in Warri South local government will shock anyone who cares to observe the large number of lunatics on this old federal road. More worrisome is the construction of tents at strategic locations across the length and breadth of these routes without any concern by those in government.

A female lunatic who occasionally sweeps a section of the NPA Expressway opposite the New Port gate has in the last 7 months or there about erected a tent for herself where she now uses as her permanent home! Former office premises of defunct Societe General Bank close to the Warri Main market as well as several other open shanties erected along the NPA Expressway and other major streets in Warri are areas these lunatics whose origin remains unknown use as their abode. Some residents of Warri spoken to have been apprehensive of the development due to reported cases of ritual killings attributed to persons who disguised as lunatics few years ago at the Edjeba end of the Expressway. While some persons may be treating the development with kid gloves, it is important for government at all levels as well as other relevant stakeholders to arrest the situation before it degenerates to a situation that will result to monumental human and infrastructural damage!
